Sometimes life is like an bar of Cadburys Whole Nut chocolate. No really. Rich and sweet, but get to the core of it, and there’s always something hard and rocky buried inside to disrupt the pleasure. Deep, huh? Sometimes however, bands are like an inverted bar of said chocolate.

Disseminate the hard, un-nourishing centre and you’ll find something creamy, dreamy and pleasurable at its centre. This would be ‘Tape 23’ by Fans Of Kate. Wonky vocals, plinky plonk piano and a whiff of middling nineties indie rock surround said treat, but bite down to the chorus and you’ll find something grand and utterly glorious that climbs till it can go no higher and then falls gracelessly to earth.

But what a chorus. The trick is repeated on the actually-much-better second track ‘A Pattern’ that quite literally can’t wait to get to its Elbow-sized peak. Recommended. In parts.

Better than Reagan, I'd say.

Re: Fans Of Kate - Tape 23

Are they the same Reagan band whose song 'with the current' was available on their website some time ago ? It was promising and I will certainly check the new band !

The new EP is sick! Picked mine up yesterday and it's been well worth the wait. Almost holds a candle to their live shows which won me over from the start. They're playing London tonight (16th) at Club Fandango and they're in Bournmouth this Thursday at Rubber Soul.

The single is just the bomb, much better plinking and plonking on that

Tape 23 x 1

Nice review. Never got 'round to hearing the original Tape 23 but you pen a very intriguing write up, fine job. As it is I wasn't impressed enough by I Don't Know What To Do With My Hands but that's hardly your fault.
