With a worryingly Feeder-esque intro, Roddy and the boys announce their return to the singles market with something of a reinvention.

A little more pomp and a lot more melancholy is the order of the day, served up with some nice MOR production. ‘Love Steals Us From Loneliness’ even comes complete with its very own power-ballad chorus. In fact, the more I listen to this the closer I get to a Bryan Adams concert.

Certainly further away from the Idlewild of old: slightly shambolic, a little more ragged but always full of energy. Nowadays they sound fed-up with sweaty club venues, and glare angrily when they hear 'Summer Of 69' on the radio. That could be them, y’know. From Wembley to Hampden Park, they’ve clearly got some grand designs.

Get real, boys. Your forte was never pedestrian balladry, nor was it treading water in front of 80,000 hamming up the hits. It was a little spontaneity, a more ramshackle arrangement and basically everything this song lacks.

"Don't tell me you’re afraid of the past" croons Woomble and on this evidence Idlewild fans shouldn't be: the past is much better. Just goes to show that sounding like REM isn’t necessarily a good thing these days, especially for bands who’ve built up a fanbase by doing something altogether more visceral.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

it might not have the same charms they used to, but its a good piece for what it does.
if it was in the context of another band i bet youd have given it 3 or more ... come on its nowhere near the bryan adams level of drivel.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Sadly, the rest of the album follows on in a similar vein.
It seems the 'wild of 'Roseability' and 'When I Argue...' are a distant memory.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

This didn't jump out at me first time I heard it, but I love it now.

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Same with me.

I'm not sure what I should read into Roddy saying it's the most instant track on the album.

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Ditto. The more i hear it the more i like it, although i could really do without those harmonies on the intro.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

I can't see the Feeder/Bryan Adams comparisons at all. It's a really good pop song with an awesome chorus. Okay, it's not as fast or chaotic as A Modern Way Of Letting Go or Film For The Future, but it's not trying to be is it? It's pitched somewhere between You Held The World and American English I'd say, and does it very well. Looking forward to the new album anyway!

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

It does plod a bit. It's nicely catchy and it's not as beefy as stuff as the past. But compared to a few other singles from returning/new bands out this month (Doves, Bloc Party et al), it's vaguely second-rate.

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

I haven't heard this yet but I could tell from the remote part that they were going in a stadium direction and I don't like it much.

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

i think the new album is a step back from the stadium direction. for me, its their best album! El Capitan would have made a better first single though, and look out for track 7.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Idlewild were best somewhere between Hope is Important and 100 Broken Windows. Since then it's been a slow slide to mediocrity.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

unfotunately, this is by far the greatest track on the album.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

i agree entirely with scarfo

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Idlewild are a tamed has been on the evidence of this single. The Remote Part signalled the onset of rot, lets hope the Dutch Elm disease is reversible.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Yeah, i've also witnessed the demise of Idlewild. It's a crying shame. Hope is important and 100 broken windows were ace - had a rough, arty edge to them they did. Then i found myself listening to The Remote Part and hearing Deacon Blue! the horror!! Can they not see their really quite rapid slip into rock-lite??

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

C'mon, this might not be the best thing they've ever done but 4/10? Jesus, that's far too harsh. A little relativity please. An average song from a good band is not a bad song.

x

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

I'm disgusted. From the transcendence of '100 broken windows' to music compared with REM and a review containing the term 'MOR'. I feel vindicated in my opinion that the Remote Part was the first stage in a gradual degeneration into rock mediocrity.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Bugger! I feared this mite happen! The 'Rock-lite' theme continuing as BobbyDavro puts accurately! shite! Bring back the rawness and edgyness. This glossy production from many bands these days on their albums is begining to piss me off. Someone copied me the new Jimmy Eat World album. I was nearly violently ill. Some of it sounds like It was directly made for Dawsons creek soubdtrack or something. Its horrid! Stop this! Biffy Clyro keep it raw....Idlewild should too!

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

it's a fucking abismal song. i'm dreading the album but still got a ticket to see them with hope

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Sounds like REM to me.

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Yeah, I'm a retard ... I didn't realise that that was already picked up on in the article.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Didn't like it too much at first, but the more I listen, the more I like it.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

hmm everyone is saying that the entire album is like this. I am beginning to regret pre-ordering the album before i've even heard it.
And Roddy's hair looks stupid

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Ah, fellow scots...

I have not heard the single - but have been listening to 100 broken Windows and the Remote Part on and off for the last couple of weeks - I would like to say I refuse to believe the album is that bad...but, as many have agreed, they do seem to be sliding into something not quite Idlewild. 'I am what I am not', anyone?

As i say - I've not heard the single - I'll come back when i do...

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

I really like this song, it's nice. The rest of the new album is pretty horrible though - and some of the lyrics are just painful. If i hear Woomble using another one of those stupid supposed paradoxes, some sort of genocide will be on the cards. "We exist without existing" and "And you are an opportunity
without an opportunity" are the ones that spring to mind; i'm sure he'll have just nicked them out of some pretentious books, but that doesn't stop them from being crap lyrics. Of course, none of this would matter if they still rocked... but they don't. Bring back Bob.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

saw them play it live at one of their acoustic gigs, it was incredible!! i really like it, cant wait for the new album!!

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

I like R.E.M. Leave them alone.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Please refrain from joining the current fashion of attacking Idlewild. I enjoy this song. The album is even better. Once we can get past the fact that we will never hear another Self Healer, we can appreciate the latest offerings for what they are. More melodic certainly. Very different. But that doesnt mean bad. As somone above said, this song from a new band would not recieve such a rating. I too lament the loss of the Idlewild of old. Get over it. They are still very very good.

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Agreed; as much as I loved 'Captain' and 'Hope is Important', evolution is important in order for a band to stay afloat. If Idlewild had kept releasing 'Hope is Important' clones, they would have received criticism for stagnating. 'Love Steals Us from Loneliness' is as good a single as 'When I Argue I See Shapes' or 'Roseability'... it's just different. I guess I'm just not plugged into the UK rock scene's idiolect enough - I didn't realise change was synonymous with decay.
Besides, I found '100 Broken Windows' to be far more "MOR" than 'The Remote Part'.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

I bet 'Peeps into Fairyland' are pissed off cause this is blatantly a slightly poppier version of the scottish folk rock that they did so well.

In my opinion, it sounds like this is the album that should've followed 100 broken windows, not the remote part. If they have to 'soften' then this is the best way i reckon.

re: harmonies at the start

no, no, no.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

I think the new single is excellent. they are developing what they achieved in the last album into great songs. The new album is going to be excellent. They have found what they were looking for in the last album.

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Yep I agree, the tide of idlewild bashing in this forum has changed. I dig the song, it's different, more mature, more mature people will probably like it. For fux sake enjoy watching a band grow else we will remain stuck in this rut of trendy bands (Bloc party, Franz) releasing tragically hip records that sell well for 6 months and then get overlooked!

Thats a warning / promice!

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

lol bloc party are TRULY shit

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

I like it, brilliant

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

hey, its not that bad, its definitly a grower

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

sorry, but its utter shite

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

What is the fucking world coming to? Like every band that are good for some reason they become shite when the mainstream latches onto them, so here's what should happen that would cheer me up:
!) Take a pair of scissors to Roddy's ridiculous barnet
2) Reinstate the legend that is Bob Fairfoull as in my opinion was hugely underrated and probably one of the main reasons why Idlewild were so good. In saying that this song isn't completely terrible byt it's nowhere near the quality of Little Discourage, shapes, Roseability, Close the Door, etc. Still in saying that it could be worse we could be fans of Cliff

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Tommy Tommy Tommy.....
Idlewild have been going for almost 10 years now. Do they have to stay the same as they did when they started?
No , they are growing old as people AND as a band and peoples tastes and styles change. I think it is a natural progression and they are proud of the album they have made and Roddy says at last they are the band they have always wanted to sound like (he said that in The List). So quit moaning about the Good Old Days - those days were excellent at the time but they are gone.

The new album is a bit more laid back but there is still some good rawk! on there too. The new single and the new album are definately growers. I honestly think that this could turn out to be my favourite Idlewild album.
My only beef is with the lyrics - Roddy is far more personal on this album than ever before which gets a + but he gets a - for some pretty pish lines. As someone said before, there are a few "oppportunity without an opportunity" moments.
The harmonies are glorious throughout the whole album.
My favourite song is called Too Long Awake which ROCKS then appears later on (if you leave the cd running) as an extra track but done acoustic. It is mind blowing!

PS I'll give you credit - Woombles hair is shocking but not as shocking as Rod's!!!
PPS Bob Fairfoull - what is so cool about someone pissing their life away against a toilet wall and being unable to play the right songs at gigs? Bob was a liability and was holding the band back. You associate him with the louder/rockier part of the Idlewild story but he had nothing to do with the songs. He got told what to play and he played it (if he wasn't pissed out of his face).
He seemed like a sweet guy but a legend is going to far.
If he was still in the band then I think they would still be going down the route they are going.

I recommend you get the album Tommy - it is really good.

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Fair does man to be honest I was slightly pissed when I wrote that message and yeah its growing on me now. The only thing that gets to me is that people who start listening to Idlewild now will assume that they've always been like that and it annoys me for instance my mate starting talking about them after American English, hence me ribbing the fuck out of him. I don't know the reason I talk about Fairfoull is because I started to listening to Idlewild when I was teenager so I'm probably living in the past, e.g. watching Yorkshire thrash Lancashire to a back drop of you just have to be who you are as we marched on to win the county championship, ah good times.

P.S. I've been trying for years to buy Queen of the troubled teens, you don't know where it can be purchased from do you?

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

yes I know there are two gramatical errors in the last message

Re: Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

ebay for QOTT, should be about 70-80 squids

Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

Mr Pancakes I've revised my opinion been listening to LSUFL a few times and its definetly grown on me, think its a good song in its own right. Given more thought even on albums in the past such as hope the better songs probably been the less chaotic, let me sleep, happy to be here tonight. Hopefully will get a ticket for the Manchester gig, up the wild
