All the best songs tell a story. They have a beginning and a middle eight and a huge rousing end that makes you want to fight or dance or have a little cry. 'Club Hoola Hoop’s Walls' is no exception: it’s the tale of a couple of hipsters trying to get it on but being so cool they almost miss each other. In the hands of Morrissey or Jarvis or emo this would be a tale of derision, sung with a sneer. With the frenetic energy of Cherubs however it becomes something not only danceable, but also life-affirming.

Staale’s vocals range from a drawling ennui to a yelping delivery that makes him sound like a Julian Casablancas who gives a shit, and the whole thing is played with the bouncing urgency of Kaiser Chiefs. Containing as well the ‘STOP- has it ended already or are they only playing with us-START’ that everyone loves, this single has dance-floor-filler elegantly scrawled all over it.

The hipsters do get it on in the end, incidentally. Sorry to have spoilt the end, but all the best stories have a happy ever after.

Cherubs - Club Hoola Hoop's Walls

i like them, but they need to decide whether they want to be the libertines or interpol. it's a bit of a bizarre mix really.

Cherubs - Club Hoola Hoop's Walls

Why do all bands have to find one specific sound? The Beatles never settled on one sound, neither did Bowie, or Blur for that matter. Why do all bands have to be as one dimensional as Oasis or The Strokes. I think The Cherubs are ace. Bizarre mix or not.

What I was trying to say was; let it be about the songs and the music.

Cherubs - Club Hoola Hoop's Walls

I agree with you daggermouth! Cherubs are ace, this single and B-side is ace... Aces all round really! Who cares if they are a mix of other stuff? At the end of the day, its the songs that are important, and what a couple of 'ace' (that word again!) songs they are!! Ace ace ace ace ace ace ace!!!!!

Re: Cherubs - Club Hoola Hoop's Walls

i didn't mean they have to sound like either of those bands, but they sound confused. the styles conflict with a negative result in my opinion, as they can occasionally come across like interpol with a low budget.

that's rarely, mind, great songs.
