But wait! What’s that I hear? Yes… waitasec… it is! It’s that something else! Y’know, that something else that transforms noise into music worth listening to. The At The Drive-In or Sonic Youth factor. This is Righteous Noise, ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake about it.
A couple of minutes in and… you cheeky little tykes!! They’ve only gone and layered some chugging guitars deep within the noise. Barely audible, but still there. Damn them. It’s genius, it’s something for everyone and no-one; so far from straightforward that it’s almost backward. Marvellous!
This Et Al somewhat inevitably suffer from following up their Dance To The Radio label-mates on this split 7”. Their idea of experimental is lacing ‘He Shoots Presidents’ with distracting feedback, much to the track’s detriment.
‘He shoots presidents / she needs a holiday’ go the lyrics, but without a decent tune to carry them along or a semblance of innovation they’re lost in a sea of noise and mediocrity. Some nice snippets of melody permeate the latter stages, but it’s all over by then. In truth, it never really began for them.
