British Sea Power are undoubtedly the envy of their peers - young, intelligent, enthusiastic, full of original ideas and the main cause for so many wetting their pants with excitement. Or at least, that’s what we’re led to believe is the case in the States, as MTV's banned it in case there is an epidemic of people unable to control their bodily fluids after hearing Yan sigh: “all this excitement gets us a little wetter, wetter.”
But knicker-soaking aside, 'Please Stand Up' demonstrates just how far they have come. It’s a reflective little number exploring Yan’s country lad roots, boosted with a sunshine melody and a boisterous guitar riff. What’s more apparent is a tighter sound and stronger, husky vocals that continues the same magic as past gems like 'Carrion'. Be sure, this is yet another top 20 hit, giving us a sigh of relief that sometimes there is a glimmer of hope in such a soulless industry.
British Sea Power - Please Stand Up
Ingredients
vegetable oil, for deep-frying
110g/4oz haggis, diced
1 tbsp sage, chopped
110g/4oz self-raising flour
enough fizzy water to make a batter
salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the roast vegetables
4 tbsp olive oil
2 baby carrots
2 slices of swede
¼ leek, sliced
salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the sauce
¼ pint beef stock
dash of Worcestershire sauce
knob of butter
salt and freshly ground black pepper
dash of soy sauce
splash of Scotch whisky
Method
1. Heat a pan one-third filled with vegetable oil, for deep-frying, until a breadcrumb will sizzle gently in it (CAUTION: Hot oil is very dangerous. Do not leave unattended).
2. For the roast vegetables, heat the oil in a pan until hot and roast the carrots, swede and leek over a medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until tender and slightly blackened.
3. Mix the haggis, sage and flour together in a bowl. Mix in enough fizzy water to make a smooth batter and stir in the seasoning.
4. Shape the mixture into small balls and then deep-fry in the hot oil for 3-4 minutes, or until cooked through and golden brown. Remove using a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.
5. For the sauce, heat the stock, Worcestershire sauce, butter, seasoning, soy sauce and whisky into a pan and simmer gently for up to 10 minutes, until reduced. Whisk occasionally.
6. Transfer the roast vegetables onto a serving plate and serve the fritters alongside.
7. Drizzle the sauce over to serve.
