As we reel in horror at the latest Oasis LP, stir a thought for the Young Offenders Institute. Brought up on biscuits and copies of 'Definitely Maybe', this their first single, manages to capture the spirit of Oasis circa 1993 more than the same said band have done for a long, long time.

Is this an Oasis pastiche? Probably not - I don't think Young Offenders are actually that clever. Instead it's a heart felt outpouring of youth, joy and hunger. It's probably the most infectious rock song you'll hear this side of the summer.

It's also incredibly cheesy and owes much to the absurd kitchen sink lyricisms of Gallagher snr. Fuck it, it is an Oasis song. But it's also better than any that's been released on Big Brother records...

Re: Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

Hmmm... not particularly moved by the crass coke snorting on this.
Otherwise it'd be alright.
just... too... silly.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

But at least it doesn't sound like Interpol.
Every other band and their granny sounds like Interpol at the moment.
If YOI is what it takes for these fucking indie kids with Ian Curtis fixations to go away, then god bless these pikey chancers.

'If YOI is what it takes for these fucking indie kids with Ian Curtis fixations to go away'

I've never heard them, but going by the looks of them, if they asked me to go away from anywhere I would most certainly listen to them...

Re: Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

lol, the one on the left looks like the kind of guy who writes his nickname on bus stops.

Re: Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Of

"writes his nickname"?!!
get with it!

TAGGING!

;)

Re: Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Of

I think the worst offenders in the "sounds like interpol" party is the deaprture. But interpol are awesome.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offend

It's very very similar sounding to Stay Young by Oasis...This is one of Tony Wilson's new bands

Re: Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offend

hmmm. not convinced.

it does sound remarkably oasis-esque (bad thing IMHO). they sound like theyd be good live, but i dunno, doesnt do anything for me. tony wilson has probably proclamied them as being the saviours of rock and roll and the greatest thing since elvis or sumthing, and so therefore they must be. did any1 see that celebrity programme in the jungle that he was on?

very surreal. i think the asian policewoman from the thin blue line and jo guest were on it too. it was surreal.

Re: Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offend

I saw that program - Extreme Celebrity Detox, or something like that. Yes, it was amusingly surreal seeing Jo Guest & the girl from Goodness Gracious Me/Thin Blue Line off their faces on halucinogenic potions, with Tony taking it all in his stride and pissing off to bed.

Re: Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offend

but Stay Young was by Ultrasound, not Oasis.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

I thought "Acid Man" was a great tune.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

what a load of shit this band are.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

"they sound like theyd be good live"...you don't have to offer olive branches to Institute fans. saw um in stoke recently and was APPALLED! oasis...with a rapper...
I need this band like i need an AIDS infected water-source

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offend

from that picture

Northern Uproar anyone?

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offend

this band are shit. it makes me sick to think that people may think this is the best that manchester have to offer, same old oasis inspired toss. there are some quality bands coming out of manchester at the moment without the braindead influences these *chavs seem to have. what a a load of shit this band are.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

I don't think its been said anywhere that they are the best in Manc, but...

The fact is I feel that Manchesters band scene is pretty under represented on DIS generally, but then again
its hardly as lively as Leeds or Nottingham right now so maybe thats why.

The Oasis/Mondays/Roses baggy loudmouth fuckhead thing gets imposed on Manc by everywhere else - fucking London especially - people seem to forget the Smiths and the Fall also came from here.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

they're just not a good advert for music coming out of manchester.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

True, incidentally as a fellow manc resident, whos rocking yer proverbial disco right now?

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

probably most impressed with fear of music in recent times, they were pretty exciting. wfanfc are also making cool sounds, and even though i personally don't rate the longcut as much as zane lowe seems to, they're a much more relevant band than this bunch will ever be.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

Agreed, fear of music release on melodic compilation out soon - www.melodic.co.uk

kindly check this my band out if you get a chance

I promise you we sound NOTHING like Oasis :)

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

I will do. When and where's your next show. That name rings a bell, i think i've read a review of your's somewhere.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offend

for a moment i though that the band 'young offenders' had a new release. man alive was that a bad band.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

I've seen this band live 3 times and they are absolutely the bollox. Times are changin guys - the indie scene ain't going to be the domain of your middle class shoe gazing university educated don't-smile-on-stage boys for much longer. The Young Offenders are buzzing, energised, fuck-it-all party people just celebrating being in a band and being young.

Oasis + Madness + Sex Pistols = Young Offenders Institute. Awsome, shambolic, hilarious, dangerous and destined to be huge. Go Collyhurst - JP for President.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

And perhaps the reason they sound a bit like Oasis is because they're produced by Owen Morris. Apparently, he saw them at their first ever gig at Cellar Vie during ITC and offered them a week in his studio straight away. The Young Offenders are going to be a big part of Manc music history whether you like it or not. And no, I'm not related to any of them (thank god) and I'm not sleeping with any them either.

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

"the reason they sound a bit like Oasis"...
replace "reason" with "excuse" and "a bit" with "exactly" seriously though, each to his own, I saw this band and sat there like a dog who'd been shown a card-trick. I just don't get it, though my mate went wild. I think they'll have some success, particulalry with indie fans circa oasis, etc. can't see um being huge just because they'll divide opinion too much. For example, my massive oasis fan mate hates them for rippin um off...million dead were on the same bill incidentally
"middle class shoe gazing university educated don't-smile-on-stage boys" they are not!

Young Offenders Institute - We're The Young Offenders

the best band coming out of collyhurst are without a doubt THE PEDESTRIANS... good mates with the young offenders so im told... spotted the singer from peds and bassist from young offenders causing chaos at leeds festival
