The Long Blondes: Appropriation (By Any Other Name)

Something Sheffield charity-shop glamsters The Long Blondes have in bucketloads is style. They also have confidence, showmanship and possibly even panache. Their latest single 'Appropriation(By Any Other Name)' displays all these qualities, and does so with a unfussy ramshackle charm which you’d have to be quite heartless not to be won over by.

It’s sweet-yet-jagged new wave pop music tumbling downhill, the instruments seeming to hit the right notes almost at random as the song flails its arms to keep from tripping. But fear not! For these tunes have far too much momentum to ever stutter out before their time is up, and for the disoriented listener the focal point of Kate’s strong, tuneful and gutsy vocals suffice to tie it all up neatly and keep your ears on the ball… or something.

Mixed metaphors aside, this is a brilliant single from a really rather special band. It’s chaotic, alive, sparky, original and, as I may have pointed out before, utterly charming – and I think that you, dear reader, need it in your life. That rhetorically troublesome ball is in your court…

They were SO very boring live. But I guess I'm the only person that hates them.

Re: The Long Blondes - Appropriation (By Any Other Nam

i agree Super Sheep - they don't have any Xfactor

Re: The Long Blondes - Appropriation (By Any Other Nam

The Blondes roool - but they can be ropeyish sometimes, like all pop outfits. I suggest giving them another chance and hope to find them on form cos they are stuffed to the knackers with ripsnortin good tunes. Unless you don't like tunes, in which case they would certainly bore you.

The Long Blondes - Appropriation (By Any Other Name)

You may not be by yourself, I think I need to be convinced more of The Long Blondyness goodness.

Or I could keep thinking they are quite rubbish?

Not sure yet.

Is THERE any need to put words in capitals to make a point, its your point dont TRY and force it on others.

What the Long Blondes offer is a refreshing alternative to the usual same old three cord wonders. They are a breath of fresh air in a market that is by enlarge dominated by overstyled idiots with only a couple of hours guitars lessons they've mostly forgotten since the age of 15.

Quite why you have to label new bands in the good/bad, x factor/no x factor catogory is beyond me. Surely there are always good and bad points to groups, but to deride new ones after one live gig or one single surely only points to how VERY VERY WRONG you are.

Try have a good listen and see if you can say something constructive, or something you havent pasted from the popstars website.

Ooh, look at you in your state of complete seriousness replete with carefully constructed paragraphs and officially initialled signoff. I can imagine you sitting in front of your keyboard, brow furrowed, keen to set the world to rights, your sense of self-importance driving you to impart the wisdom you have been uniquely blessed with.

Pitty the points you make are utterly banal, well-worn and therefore totally sleep-inducing.

Get a life.

Re: The Long Blondes - Appropriation (By Any Other Name)

Your right fumbling dike. The paragraphs were well constructed and the signoff did give the post a professional look lacking from the teenage angst ridden dross you wrote, and who am I to argue with a chat room prophet like yourself about my unique talent?

Anyway I thought the video fitted the music like a hand in a glove, perhaps what fumbling dike was doing at 01.18am.

Excuse me if this is totally banal, well worn or sleep inducing, if it is may I suggest we all go round to the fumbling dikes for alco pops and doritos and discuss the compostions changes in mood and texture.

Anyway I m off to get a life and go see the long blonds in new york, I ll be the one wearing the red rose propping up tha bar if your interested fumbling dike.

ha, sorry dude, didn't mean to touch a nerve although i'm glad you responded with such vitriol, maybe people have made similar poits to you before?

just couldn't help cringing at your original post and thought it would probably be a good thing to express the thoughts everyone else was probably having too before you get too carried away.

yours, the dike x

I'm rather impressed by this after hearing it on the video nme link

it seems to be based around Vertigo,

at least i'm returning to a musically productive sheffield,

The Long Blondes - Appropriation (By Any Other Name)

This single seems to sound quite like Elastica - a comparison I've oftern read but never quite understood until now. But it's much more sussed and savvy and words like that. Go and buy it and download other stuff from www.filthylittleangels.com.

Was the video filmed in the Arts Tower? Brilliant!

The Long Blondes - Appropriation (By Any Other Name)

I bought this a couple of weeks ago but only just got round to listening to it (whoops). On first listen I like it a lot. Joining in with the comparison game, I think they sound a bit like Blondie.
