With a John McEntire-produced album in the can, much is expected from harmonious poppers The Research, their deadpan-meets-the-delirious kitchen-sinkers receiving Chinese whisper recommendations from the right corners of the relevant press. This double a-side effort doesn't disappoint whatsoever, chief Researcher Russell weaving uncomplicated tales of crazy love - that's 'I Love You, But...' - and quasi-melodramatic loss in waiting - that's t'other one.

But - and gawdnose there's always one sting in the tail - one does wonder how this absolutely unfashionable merriment can transform itself involuntarily into some unit-shifting beast to match today's indie-pop heavyweights. Sweetness and smiles just isn't rock 'n' roll, y'know (however much you use the f-word, which is a lot incidentally), and when you're pitching a product that's rooted itself somewhere in the vast gulf between The Tindersticks and The Teletubbies, well, folk'll confuse easy.

Oh bollocks to reservations born of commercial doubts: The Research are lovely. Get some in and crack y'self a Cheshire grin.

The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But...

Liking The Research, there's a rumour going round that the release of the album has been put back to February on their messageboard. Anyone else heard this? any one know if it's true or not?

The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But...

this single deserves a much higher rating. ambiguity is not something which should be used to detract from the brilliance of a song. Besides, if it was easier to understand easily ("either tindersticks or the teletubbies"... er, how much music ISN'T between the polar opposites of sweet popular melody and a pre-school children's television programme? Do you always use these two examples as benchmarks?) then it'd be easier to discard. And this band should NOT be discarded.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

i think he was saying that it provides a bridge between those two.
i think you'd have to be quite stupid not to see that. its a pretty often used technique.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

i mean to infer that putting the research's sound somewhere between some indie-pop band and some-pointlessly-irrelevant-example-of-a-random-thing-in-an-entirely-different-entertainment-medium renders the actual comparison a little bit surplus to requirement. it means nothing. it's only marginally less pointless than saying they sound like a different bad "on acid". i don't see how it helps the reader decipher what the band sounds like, or whether the author is excited about it/disappointed by it/enlightened by it/whatever.

ok, so now i sound like even more of a prick than i did before. all it was meant to be was a harmless niggle. ah well, screw it. all i really think is that the research deserve a lot more care and attention than that review gave them. they could actually be huge and brilliant.

i'll stop now, i feel more uncomfortable with every word i write. i'm also slightly drunk. don't insult my intelligence, dickwad.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

yeah.
cos music can only be compared to music.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

Cos they are cute tragedy in two easy pieces.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

more because the teletubbies is a shit example.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

Of what? Something kiddie-like, round and fuzzy and disturbingly cute?

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

yeah, if you like.

starting to regret ever opening my mouth...

i stand by the fact that the research are not as disposable and aimed-at-pre-school and la-dee-da as the teletubbies.

i'm all out. you win. a million bravos.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

hence the whole tindersticks thing.
i dont get it! it was a positive review!

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

yeah i know, i'm sorry. i just got frustrated. i've seen the research really regularly since they started out, i know those kids, and i honestly believe that they deserve full-on 5 star reviews. ESPECIALLY for "I love you but", because it breaks my heart every time i hear it. Not by being twee or cutesy, but because it's so honest and so individual and exciting. I love the restrictions, and i love the simplicity of it all, and i love the way that it's so well tailored and the songs are perfect. i don't know another band who can write songs this good. I haven't felt so pepped since i first heard the first 2 weezer albums... and they're 2 of my favourite ever albums. i find the research so magical, i want everyone to love them as much as i do.

sorry mike, sorry alcxxk.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, B

Not at all... I get what you're saying, and I was never trying to insinuate that they're disposable in any way; rather that the music is soft and cute, but the sentiments are rather nastier, a la someone like The Tindersticks, or even Arab Strap at times.

Your point was well justified.

The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But..

I saw the video on 120 minutes by the other week and it is great. I also saw them last year(?) at the long blondes single launch and despite myself I thought they were brilliant.

The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But...

this band are AMAZING!!!!!

The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But..

Yeah the album has been moved to February..

The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But...

Cool, i used to work with russel, the dude in the band, hes a sound bloke. Dunno what they sound like though.

Re: The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But...

I slept in Russell's living room last weekend. I was invited so i'm not just being wierd. Though I am a bit wierd. Anyhow. I've heard the album (well done me) and it really is quite fantastic. Appeciate your point Mike about where the band might fit in; but I'd like to think that the sheer quality of songwriting, not to mention those lovely harmonies, will see the album go steller because they really deserve it. x

The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But...

The single is rather lovely yes, they're a bit slow at releasing records though... surely we wont have to wait until February for an already finished album? "i love you but.." ties my heart in knots.

The Research - C'Mon Chameleon / I Love You, But...

this single is the best!
why aren't this band bigger again?
love to the research!
