Cherubs: Man Of No Importance

Is it already wrong to display an obvious debt to the depressive overtones of Joy Division and their latter-day spawned ilk? If not, then hats off to Cherubs, who've successfully conjoined the rampantly jagged pop guitars of Interpol's more immediate numbers with Curtis-hued vocals bleak enough to cast body-clearing shadows over Miami Beach at the height of summer.

What they've got to say flies by - something about some man that's not got much to say, or something - but that's simply because of the unrelenting sound of now that refuses to let up for a perfect three-and-a-half minutes. It's absolutely radio-friendly fodder for 2005; quite what 2006 will make of Cherubs though is an entirely different matter. Perhaps the b-side, the scuzzy and shouty romp 'Hey Bunny' - as much Billy Idol as it is Bloc Party - is an indication of the band's real intentions? For now though, for the summer of '05, the trilby is doffed.

Cherubs - Man Of No Importance

wtf is their last single doing on the b-side?

Cherubs - Man Of No Importance

It's a demo version. Apparently it's very different and not just laziness, according to them, but I haven't heard it for myself yet.

Also, it's not their last single, it was the one before (ie the first) - 'Club Hoola Hoop's Walls' or the 'I Go To Whom I Dressed For EP', depending on which you want to call it, was the last one.

oooh

the demo version PISSES on the single version from a height!
so that's ok then.

Re: Cherubs - Man Of No Importance

ps. oh yes, forgot about the other single...

Re: Cherubs - Man Of No Importance

Easy mistake, it was pretty inconsequential by comparison.

Re: Cherubs - Man Of No Importance

club hoola hoop...is rather good

Re: Cherubs - Man Of No Importance

THE CAUSE:

Great Ormond Street Hospital based in London treats more than 90,000 patients each year, including children from outside the UK - children who are suffering from the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening conditions. They receive the best medical care that money can buy, but the NHS funding cannot meet these ever-rising costs, so charitable donations to the Great Ormond Street Children's Charity are needed (GOSHCC REG CHARITY:No:235825). This desperate need for additional donations has been highlighted recently, with the hospital in the press because of funding difficulties. Please click on the following links to articles:

Funding crisis at hospital:

We want to help as best we can so that the hospital can buy the equipment they need, refurbish the building and keep beds open. What better way than a gig where people can raise money by simply having a great night out and seeing some great bands. For more information on the hospital and its tireless work for sick children please go to www.gosh.org. Find out where your money will be going at http://www.gosh.org/about_us/campaigns/index.html .

THE BANDS:

GREAT BANDS, ALL KINDLY PLAYING FOR FREE!

NEILS CHILDREN- Discordant, enthralling, angular guitar punk with mangled sounding effects pedals from this London 3 piece signed to Poptones. They recently charted with their last single Always The Same which follows hot on the heels of an acclaimed mini album 'Change/Return/Success' and blistering raw singles such as the fantastic 'I Hate Models'. A must see band. www.neilschildren.co.uk/

'the razor-edged punk funk jerk of the Slits, the icy atmospherics of early Cure all lit up by the firecracker spirit of the Clash' - NME

MISS BLACK AMERICA-Skyscraping songs combined with chiming punk guitars from a band led by the bold and intelligent statement of frontman Seymour Glass. New single 'DOT DOT DOT' was recently Rocksound single of the month and the band are on the verge of releasing a new long awaited 2nd album 'Terminal' which has been picking up rave reviews. A band getting better and better since the release of their acclaimed debut album. www.missblackamerica.net/

'The best voice-to-the-voiceless punks around... (second album) 'Terminal' plots an intelligent course through fizzing energy and indie majesty.' Rocksound

'Just when they've got our attention they veer off with a brilliant, grandstanding guitar solo and another, even better, chorus. Fantastic.' Rocksound Single Of The Month 'Dot Dot Dot'

REDJETSON- Fantastic epic rock on Drowned In Sound Recordings from a band whose debut album 'New General Catalogue' Kerrang have called "a masterpiece of invention". A band who combine the soundscapes of Mogwai with the skewed delicate pop sensibilities of early Ride. Set to support Bloc Party at the Brixton Academy in October. Catch them in intimate surroundings before they become as huge as they surely deserve to be. www.redjetson.co.uk
'Where before they incited grinning comparisons to Six By Seven, Joy Division, Idlewild, these now feel redundant; there isn't anyone around that sounds like this band' -Drowned In Sound

CARETAKER- Post punks who released a clutch of fantastic EPs on the Badmusic label and a brilliantly received mini album on the legendary Fierce Panda label, before taking an indefinite break. Now they are back with a new EP 'Sign Of Four' and set to re-establish those plaudits all over again with their distinct blend of Slint like song structures, atmospheric, intricate melody and blistering heavy crescendos. http://listen.to/caretaker

'the instrumental 'Entrance' twists and turns with lo-fi guile, the tempestuously buzzing 'Routine' displays punk speed and acres of sharp edges, and the wonky guitar lines, sudden changes in pace and submerged, off-kilter melodies of everything else make the likes of My Vitriol seem like lifeless dull whingers'-NME

CHERUBS-Supported the Libertines a while back and have since gone from strength to strength, signing to Cargo records and releasing a clutch of acclaimed releases. Set to play Reading and Leeds festivals this year. On their way to big things with new single 'A Man of No Importance' set for release on 19th August 2005. www.cherubs-hq.com/

'Staale’s vocals range from a drawling ennui to a yelping delivery that makes him sound like a Julian Casablancas who gives a shit, and the whole thing is played with the bouncing urgency of Kaiser Chiefs' - Drowned In Sound
