Well, what's left to say, exactly? At the turn of the year, who'd have placed money on a compositionally quirky Montreal outfit charming the nation's - no, the world's - music press into unprecedented rapture with all the ease of a much-maligned Libertine?

Arcade Fire's 'Rebellion (Lies)' is a quite magical, wonderfully and woefully desperate-sounding, beautifully arranged and precisely executed four-and-something minutes of A-grade indie rock. It's the sound you wanted Mercury Rev to make after Deserter's Songs, or what a sunnier-dispositioned Interpol might craft if they'd been schooled in folk music rather than whatever gave birth to their gloom-scapes. It is pure aural escapism, a comforting temporary shelter from a world that's, by all accounts, absolutely bent on self-destruction.

If you've yet to lend an ear to the album Funeral, this is an absolutely essential purchase. Fantastically, the ever-so twee yet rather creepy B-side 'Brazil', an arrangement dating from 1939, is also adorable - its closing piano ripple alone is worth the asking price. Just go with the critical and commercial flow on this one, okay?

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

Just FOUR!?

Diver you are a cruel hearted swine, give it another star!

Re: The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

er sorry, not star - circle thing...

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

This was the song that urged me to get Funeral.

What an album, has no weak tracks to be honest.

Shame they have to put Wake Up on a BBC advert.

Re: The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

What's wrong with putting it on the BBC advert? I think it's great that it's getting a wider audience.

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

This is definately my favourite AF track.

I love it times 67'000

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

Arcade Fire + Leeds = the best thing i've ever seen in my life

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

Awesome song, best on the album. The last minute and a half is just transcendent.

Re: The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

In Of The Underside of the crossbar. Thats How good!

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

Boo, Brazil was the b-side on Cold Wind.

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

The sing has turned me on to AF. Watch out soul seekers here I come.

(would buy it but I'm skint)

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

It's good. I guess. Try The New Lows. They arent far behind. They got a song available on Itunes "Cold Shivers" and a FREE EP on their website www.thenewlows.net Gives Arcade Fire a run for their $$$.

New Lows v. Arcade Fire?

Umm...maybe some day, but my guess is "not". From the free ep posted on their site, these guys are not in the same universe, let alone ballpark. The comparison is not even apples to oranges - it's more like unripened crabapples to fresh picked tangelos.
If they're you're friends or something, I understand - but disinformation is disinformation.

Power Out = Temptation by New Order, you can even sing along with the wrong words.

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

This is both the songs that made me like the arcade fire, and made me bored of the arcade fire. It was transcendent to start with... perhaps I just need to return to it in a few years time.

Do envy those who got to see them at reading/leeds though...

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

They were very, very good. Also, the Rock Box had a stall set up, so I could get their raw and rather wonderful first EP, too.

It's a lot stranger, if you can believe that...

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

To be honest I dont rate it as much as the Power's Out or Wake Up but it's still good. Then again can you really trust my opinion cos I spelt my name wrong.

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

these are awesome, i saw them on thursday in sheffield and blew me away, just as they did in birmingham and reading fest too!

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

I saw two cds of this in HMV one of them was two pounds and one was only a quid. anyone know what the b-sides are? amazon only seems to acknowledge one of them and as per usual the tracks aren't on the back, and it's wrapped in cellophane. </anticipating pedantry>

The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

I saw them supporting Franz Ferdinand in edinburgh. It was the 2nd time id seen them.
There were fantastic and a highlight had to be when Win said he loved playing Edinburgh, especially since "playing Reading was like playing in a fucking ashtray".
