Oceansize: Heaven Alive

I wait with baited breath, my arms shaking like an electrocuted Muhammed Ali; the new Oceansize single starts to play. But wait, what's this? The track isn't new, in fact it's four years old, and quite possibly the weakest track they have put down on record.

As I prepare for a backlash from die-hard fans let me state the reasoning for this: Oceansize are renowned for their wall-of-sound approach, which they pull off better than anyone not called Kevin Shields. 'Heaven Alive' however sounds remarkably bare, the guitars pushed to the back, hiding behind electronic samples and vocals too weak to hold their own in the foreground.

Perhaps inevitably, the song sounds incredibly dated, plodding along like a nu-metal era track given a go-over by fellow Mancs Amplifier. Choirboy vocals fade in and out for no apparent reason, not adding to the song in the way that they do to the likes of Hell Is For Heroes' 'Kamichi'. Many will draw comparisons to Tool especially with Mike Vennart's vocals, but 'Heaven Alive' lacks the ingenuity or hooks of Maynard James Keenan's gang of satanists.

It's a shame when a band with the potential of Oceansize release a track like this. Hopefully it is just meant to bring in a bigger fanbase and does not highlight the standard of their forthcoming album Everyone Into Position. The track, however, is still poor and although due to the track's gestation period it's unfair to say that this is the sound of a band running out of ideas, it's still a band choosing the wrong ones - which overall is a much bigger disappointment.

Oceansize - Heaven Alive

It doesn't highlight the standard of the new album, this is definitely the weakest track on there by a long way. It doesn't sound much like any other Oceansize track either, so it's a strange strange choice for a single. They seem to put less effort into playing it live than their other songs too. I wonder if this was a record company choice as single, purely because of the glossy 'poppy' chorus?

Oceansize - Heaven Alive

I thought exactly the same when this came out. The longer version on the album does make more sense but yeah, I think this was released to try and get a few more followers.

Oceansize - Heaven Alive

Yeh the album is quite different to this, although throughout the album I feel the production is too muddy with a little over use of FX and lacks the crisp production of the debut. It all seems a little to muse, which works for a three piece but seems to let down a band with so much going on sonically. this is one of their worst songs but its true it works better on the album. its not horse shit though, but generally more is expected from Oceansize.
To use a Biffy Clyro parallel - both bands on beggars - this is their Questions and Answers.

Oceansize - Heaven Alive

yeah, well said that man. Dunno about the production yet, will give it a few more listens but, out of the 2 albums and music for nurses, I prefer the production on music for nurses, but that's just me.

Oceansize - Heaven Alive

Give it time... that song grows on you like a bastard, at least it grew on me. I think it has a damn fine planet-sized chorus, too.

Oceansize - Heaven Alive

Apparently the mix of this and the video was under-par and they had no time to release a corrected one, though? I swear I read that somewhere...

Re: Oceansize - Heaven Alive

The band openly admit to not liking the video, dunno about the mix of the song.

Oceansize - Heaven Alive

yeh i read that too mate, unfortunately i cant review a better mix :)
it did grow on me too, at first i would have given it one and a half stars.
ive heard 'charm offensive' and 'music for a nurse' too now. its not hitting me like effloresce or mfn, or even songs like 'breed siamese'

btw, the version i reviewed is the album version.

Re: Oceansize - Heaven Alive

I love the charm offensive, it's such a beautiful yet jerky kinda track, topped off with a monster riff at the end, my kinda formula! :)

However, i do think that in the context of the album the new songs make more sense than played as singles, and I don't like Breed Siamese too much as a song, but that's just me.

Oceansize - Heaven Alive

I don't actually like 'Breed Siamese' that much. I adore 'Music For A Nurse', though.

Re: Oceansize - Heaven Alive

you seriously need help my friend if this is the case.

heaven alive is a bad single choice, and really doesn't help portray what the band are quite easily capable of.

everyone into position is out this monday, now all flock out and purchase this rather splendid follow up to 'effloresce'.

note to DiS ... ensure you review this album sooner rather than later ;)
