White Rose Movement / Alsatian

Five seconds into White Rose Movement's second single and I wonder if I have the wrong CD in my stereo. The intro could (and, really, should) be the menu music for the latest FIFA video game. With the first stab of cold, hard synth, I'm jolted back to reality; and a harsh one at that.

Theirs is a brittle, industrial take on electro-pop, all pogoing bass and schizophrenic beats. With a singer whose casually alluring, not to mention heavily treated, vocals sound like a cross between Shirley Manson and Saffron from Republica (remember them?), White Rose Movement could easily be 1984's house band.

Indeed, Orwell himself would probably appreciate their sparse, desolate sound. There are guitars in here somewhere, but the ubiquitous Paul Epworth does his best to hide them deep within the drone. In the same way that Barry White provides a soundtrack for lovemaking, this is just about perfect for crashing your car to.

i like it

I think its better than you think it is.

Though based on the comment "Barry White provides a soundtrack for lovemaking, this is just about perfect for crashing your car to" I'd probably buy it even if I hadn't heard it.

I think its a bit unfair to knock the production for not making a main feature of the guitars. Their sound is a very synth heavy one live too. It's a harsh way to treat any band to attack them for their choice of prominent instruments isn't it? Maybe not.

BLASPHEMY!!

white rose movement are utter bliss.

dark driving electro-pop that is really, really well done.

i've not heard the b-side, but alsatian is great. a bit different from the other songs i've got, but still really really well produced (which would COMPLETELY differentiate them from ANYTHING in 1984). the guitars are so completely present; filtered, but highly present. fairly simplistic, but this isn't rockNroll, this is synth/electro/pop. & it's fucking badass.

you brits are so jaded with all the music you get; i have to suffer here in the u.s. with utter SHIT being passed for music, & as usual, your country is the business, & you cannot appreciate it..... for shame.

but yes, crashing your car to this, it's quite a frenzy. on a dancefloor this will be magic, but i will probably never get to find out since NO ONE here has even heard of these guys.

I love WRM

I love them, people accuse them of trying to be eighties or something, but if it's true then they do it well.

I'd love to crash my car to this. What a way to go.

Mxx

they're

capable of way more than they've displayed so far.

eh?

this was quite a postive review. i think people forget how the new marks system works ie 0 is equivalent to the old 2.5....

yeah.

haha

it appears its been changed now anyway....

wrm

is absolutely ace. anyone who says different is deaf. but i maybe a tiny tiny bit could see a lower rating perhaps more of an 8ish 7ish if the reviewer listened to girls in the back or cruella or something before listening to alsatian. but really a 6?!? now that's just being nasty.
