Love them or loathe them, that’s your prerogative, but to deny that Panic! At The Disco are the second phenomenon-proportioned act of 2006 thus far is to demonstrate sour-faced ignorance. The Las Vegas quartet have stormed this country’s teens – the same demographic that lapped up the goth-pop of My Chemical Romance last year with such gusto – in an entirely similar fashion to the way that band from Sheffield has won the hearts of the older-and-wiser crowd.

The reason why is obvious: last single ‘I Write Sins Not Tragedies’ had everything the semi-disaffected sort required for optimum aural enjoyment – super-sized pop hooks, enough compositional creativity to attract the attentions of even hard-line haters, the suggestion of emotional turmoil in the lyrics, a vocal delivery that benefited from its imperfections, and a title that was more nu-emo that Fall Out Boy’s entire back catalogue. ‘But It’s Better If You Do’ is not as strong a standalone song, but is certain, nevertheless, to aid the ascent of the band’s star further still.

Lyrics come quick and often manifest themselves in an almost indiscernible fashion, although distress of the heart is implied in tone, at least. In a masterstroke of song-writing maturity beyond their tender years, the track’s breakdown is actually whimsical in its execution, and the overall impression is that Panic! are looking to stretch their wings beyond the span of generic convention; that they’re doing so while achieving significant commercial success is testament to the superlative pop cores of their songs.

Loathe them, do, for it seems Panic! At The Disco only feed upon such negativity, turning it into popularity-winning songs worthy of critical commendation. That this critic abstains from offering an absolute seal of approval is evidence only of his fear that friends will disown him for doing so…

Panic! At the Disco

Does anyone else think that their last song sounds suspiciously like Counting Crows?

Specifically Mr. Jones?

ungh

You identified that they're the Next MCR in terms of popularity but in quality? I don't think so. Definitely a depreciation in terms of everything about the band. But if it's all the kids have got, then it's what they'll go with.

marwood down there

more spot on

oooooooh it's DiS wars

LET'S GET IT ON

PAYOLA?

Good review.

As much as I know they're rubbish, I can't help but listen to them.

Everyone should stop denying they're brilliant, and buy their record. I haven't, but I might do.

I think they're really really intelligent. Not just due to their fitasmanywordsinaspossible lyrics, but the way they know what makes people click. Every song on the album would sound perfect on the radio.

Also, they're well good to dance to at parties.

Also:

What makes these different from people like MCR, is that these are a pop band. They appeal to everyone, even if they are slightly 'scene' or wutever that means.

Fall Out Boy do it well too.

theyre shite

i disown you

This is no where near one of their best songs.

I'm surprised it's the new single.

LOL

I love you.

shit band.

Fall Out Boy are bbeter.

LOL!!!

you

know a band are fucking god awful when fall out boy are better than them.

hahahahahahaha

This review is ironic, right?

not at all

...if you can't hear the quality pop in P!@TD then you may as well stop listening to music altogether.

It's not trying to be anything but proper pop. It has intelligence and is just the right side of being too full of itself.

They're not reinventing the wheel or owt, but they're light years ahead of Taking Back Sunday/Fall Out Boy in the emo-pop stakes.

heard this in the car t'other day

...with a friend - we were arguing, quite intensely, about whether or not it was Fallout Boy or McFly. (I: FOB / he: Mcfly) until it stopped..

"And that was the latest single to be taken from Panic at the Disco's album..."

WTF???

Catchy

but rubbish. Thats is all that can be said about it

If I dislike 'But It's Better If You Do', how will I ever be able to meet the gaze of emo kids ever again, as their mournful faces peer at me from Myspace video blogs? Should I spare their fragile feelings and forget to mention how this is not a patch on previous effort 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies', despite it not being that different? Everything is present, from the upbeat, frayed vocal line and the punchy arrangement, to the colloquial lyricism courtesy of vocalist Brendon Urie, but just as it threatens to unleash a chorus capable of puncturing lead with its frustrated anger, it falters into a skip beat at the critical moment - bouncy, pop-punky and ultimately disappointing.

However, I can’t totally scythe down the efforts of Panic! At the Disco, despite my general loathing for semi-castrato vocals. Urie may slur his words like every other nu-emo idiot, but the band behind Urie occasionally show flair with stop-start timing and pop songwriting - should they ever move away from overly-emotive vocals to something with a little more conviction, they could become something better than the next My Chemical Romance.

Despite my ultimate hatred for this single I find myself singing it every five minutes, which surely signals it’s not all bad even if I do feel one step closer to a breakdown.

Panic! At The Disco?

I think not. quite possibly the biggest waste of my nine dollars and ninety cents so far this year was, a fever you can't sweat out. the idoitic portrayal of this new fashion music scene type bullshit is not an excuse for a group to be considered a good new band. Unbelievable how people are feeding into that bullshit song "but it's better if you do." Driving my girlfriend to school every morning i scour at the phrase from that song "I'm exactly where you like me." This isn't entertaining, nor the slighest bit amusing. I don't and probably will never hear myself singing along with this single. I also enjoyed the part where they use the beginning of "I write sins, not trageties," at the end of the song. That's probably why all you bastards like this stupid new single anyways. If it's any consolation to Panic! At The Disco, I do however enjoy "I write sins, not tragedies." great song. I would have to agree with the idea that My Chemical Romance was the big band of last year, I think MCR were close to following on the tail end of Fall Out Boy's huge single, "Sugar we're going down." That's the polite way of saying, no Fallout Boy was the big band of last year. By the way this is the bias opinion of someone who lives in Wilmette, Illinois.

but

in this country, Sugar We're Going Down didn't come out last year. it came out in February and no-one heard of them till then so yeah, MCR were the big band in the UK last year.

Hell Yes

They are bloody ace at discos

they werent pop stars

in the way that type of music should be. but they were by no means unheard of.

they toured over here with fellow nu-emo band Spitalfield about 18 months ago.

well

in the public conscience they were pretty unheard of. you know what i mean, stop picking holes ;)

I saw FOB.....

2 years ago as a support band to *cough*Mest*cough* (no, I'm not proud of myself), so they've been around here for a while, just not on any kind of scale that they are now.
MCR were way bigger last year, FOB seem to be gathering speed this year, and a lot less people here seem to have heard of Panic!
