The Hidden Cameras - Awoo

by Jordan Dowling

'Guilty pleasure': never has such a usually worthless description been so fitting. Okay, a poor introduction, but its hard to know where to start with Awoo, the third Hidden Cameras full-length to reach our shores.

Quality wise, Awoo is more than likely the best pop album you will hear this year. If you can avoid sneering at the Jimmy Somerville through a butterload of reverb vocals and the occasionally cringe-worthy lyrics (“Run with your pants down, with blood in the eye”), Hidden Cameras are heartrending. There is no dip in form throughout, from the hazy B&S-esque epic ‘Death Of A Tune’ to the bare-bones acoustic twangs of ’She’s Gone’, right through to the closing moments of 'The Waning Moon'.

Hidden Cameras obviously have strong roots in American folk music, and their songs tell stories in the traditional sense despite the subject material, but the songs branch out to an extent that defies their simplistic form, touching twee-indie pop and also the driving soft-rock of bands like Journey. It should be repulsive, but it's done in such an honest manner that it's impossible not to become infatuated.

Those who want to feel separate from the music they are listening to - those that view it as a distant object with a financial value - should look elsewhere. Those who want to embrace every digitally-encoded bit of sound that should be crackling from a wine-stained record player is advised to invest emotionally. A guilty pleasure it may be, but when the pleasure is as intense as this, quite frankly who gives a fuck?

pedant time

THIRD hidden cameras album to be released over here. first: the smell of our own. second: missauaga goddam (?) third: this

oh

thought 'smell' was jus import. apologies and amended!

nope

bought it in MVC in Hellholesfield after it was in DiS' best howevermany of 2003, i did. actually, this lot's first two were both inconsistent AS, some gems, some rather boring half-an-idea songs. this one's better?

yes

its rate consistent

rate, eh?

...

Bloody hell, that one passed me by completely. I likes them lots... another to add to the list then.

lollipop = :O

Are the

Lyrics as good on this as they are on smell of.... Nothing like playing that album to people, having them tap their foot along and watch their mouths drop as they think they're lisening to a song, which upon first listening sounds like it's about men peeing on each other which it actually isn't!! Genius!

...

On 'Mississauga Goddam' there's a hell of a lot of blatant references to gay sex. Can't remember much of 'The Smell Of Our Own' but given that the cover has a load of naked arses on it, I'd say it's a fair bet.

i want another enema

missisauga is still my favourite, but awoo is a fine album. 'heji' could be one of those half-finished idea tracks, but i really like it.

gogogobuybuybuy

awoo is one of the worst tracks tho innit
