Apparently in 2005 Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly played over one hundred and fifty gigs across the country, and ’The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager pt1’, taken from the soon to be released album of the same name (sans ‘pt1’), was written on a train between gigs. So, then, the drop in quality from live set to recorded material should come as no surprise in this particular case.
Gone is the urgency, the energy, from his (for Get Cape is one Sam Duckworth) live set, and as a standalone single 'Chronicles' is found lacking. Duckworth is torn between an almost embarrassingly emphasized accent in the opening minute and the multi-layered sighs of the chorus. He does much better in the latter section, with the surprisingly crisp production adding to the vocals rather than standing in contrast.
However this production harms the instrumentation, especially the drum beats that chicane around the acoustic guitars that build the song. In the live environment the seamless blend of emo, pop and electronica combusts with a spark of unadulterated emotion, but here the tone is too sunny to add any atmosphere to the song, and yet its tempo prevents it from becoming joyous or uplifting. As the closing “ba-daas” fade out, there is no inspiration to re-press play.
Idiot Pilot showed how exciting a fresh brand of emo-indie can be when plunged under walls of effects and electronics in their breakthrough single ‘To Buy A Gun’, but here Get Cape does little to warrant more than a shrug. Pass on this and save your money 'til he plays near you - the chances are you won’t have to wait more than a fortnight.
the production on this
is actually terrible. The original version on the self titled EP is so much breezier (I think that's a good thing). So yeah, agreed.
eh?
This isn't on the EP...
Although, I do agree that the single release of I Spy is horrible horrible HORRIBLE compared to the EP version.
As is the title of this song, actually. You say this is gonna be the album title as well? Euuurgh. Much as I like Get Cape, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to download it - there's no way my last remaining semblance of street cred could stand up to going into a record shop and buying that monstrosity.
Good accurate review
Well dun.
whoops
The recording on the Dave House split is better. And the producer lives in my mates street. Uh oh
Hmm
I don't agree. But then I haven't heard the orginal ep.
I like the album alot, myself.
I'm sure this has been released 3 times now
Hasn't it?
Horrible Song.
Horrible guy.
Even worse name.
"horrible guy"
OK you don't like the name but do you actually know him?
I've known Sam since he was booking gigs in Southend about 3 or 4 years ago. He was totally into supporting the underground scene back then and to this day is still helping tiny bands. He is a genuinely kind person who is so far away from being a "horrible guy" it's untrue
Nope
It's only been out twice. Once on the Dave House split (on BSM/Gravity) and now as a single on it's own through Atlantic
This actually has sort of been released...
...three times. This release, the Dave House split and on Punktastic's Un-Scene 2 compilation - each time a differently recorded version (personally I prefer the version on the compilation).
Honestly
bland bland bland! all this new acoustic stuff (yes that includes Frank Turner) is sooo bland yet loads of people are going nuts for it! snore!
hopefully
most people will like this, as I think this tune is amazing, along with the rest of the album, but some of the production does let it down, which is a shame, as Sam has worked so hard to get to where he is today. If your not a fan of the recordings, please try and make sure you get to one of his shows on his huge tour.

yeh like i said in the review hes great live, but dont reckon much to this AT ALL
