Whether you can empathise with Badly Drawn Boy's latest offering depends entirely upon your ability to relate to his predicament in this song: jilted lover, relationship gone bad... hmm, sounds like most of us can have a fair stab at that.

A hit in waiting, then? Not really. Understanding where he's coming from is one thing, but these pianos are all a bit grand, aren't they? Hushed verses? Attempting to actually, y'know, sing? Pah! Get with the times, man. There's something missing, a bit of rapping perhaps or maybe just a half-spoken half-sung delivery from the big G himself. As it is, what we have here is something traditional, a semi-classic piece of songwriting. As we all know, you'll get nowhere doing that these days.

There is a Hot Chip remix, though, and if that were released as the A-side then Scissor Sisters might well have been quaking in their stilettos...

Nice review.

agreed.

this is a great song.

better than a six, fo' sho.

Curious production on this one

It's like three songs: the first part a weepy, boring piano drecker. Then a really cool bit with much swing and a great melody line. Then some kind of "my producer can juice this up for me while I go have a smoke outside because they won't let me smoke in the studio anymore." Finally ending with 70s soft-rocking.

Song: 6, sure.
WTF factor: 8

.

If this came out when I was 14-15 I would've LOVED it.

yeah

and if badly drawn boy were still as good as he was when i was 14 i wouldn't be so horribly disappointed.

(hot chip still rules though.)
