Hooray! The gay sci-fi western kung-fu bar-brawl fisticuffs rolling-down-stairs softcore porno flick that’s been doing the MTV rounds finally releases its soundtrack. Once again, hooray!

It has no words, no lyrics, ‘til two minutes into its allotted six; it waffles on about fighting for rights in a manner so ambiguous lead gay sci-fi cowboy Matthew ‘Snake Hips’ Bellamy could be warbling about the rules of Connect 4 – gay sci-fi western Connect 4, obviously – for all the sense to be collected and computed here. John Williams and Ennio Morricone are currently in electronic communication to determine who will attempt to sue Muse first. Maybe. If they’re not caught up in the gay sci-fi western kung-fu bar-brawl fisticuffs rolling-down-stairs softcore porno splendour of this stupid brilliance, anyway.

Have there been better singles released in 2006 than ‘Knights Of Cydonia’? Yes. Shit loads. But has there been a more ridiculously over-the-top, over-egged and utterly insanely catchy pomp-rock single released this year, and one that’s certain to be a hit at that?

Shit no.

  • Muse 8 / 10

wow.

and you don't even like these guys!

Great review

I'd give it a 10, but that's me being a bias Muse fan, who's grown up loving them.

Tbh

10 out of 10 and I don't like Muse one bit.

Agreed

This is one of the first proper rock songs in ages.

And I don't like Muse much either.

What I love about Muse

is that they don't just stick to one style.
For years they were badged as Radiohead wannabees, and possibly quite rightly so going by their early work.

Their last two and a half albums have been class.

If only it had decent B-sides

I would buy this like a shot.

their greatest moment

and an easy 10/10, surpised at the 8 considering the history of Muse love on DiS!

shame about the album mind.

I fucking hate this song

with a passion. Am I the only one???

And for the record, I've been a big fan since the beginning, so this isn't some usual anti-muse-slating.

By far one of my fave Muse songs

Over and out.

...

I like Muse. I hate this.

I think it's quite good

but an odd choice for a single.

Irritatingly

massive production.

how the fuck

have muse got 3 songs in my top twenty singles of 2006 chart?

Great song

but probably worth an 8 as a single. It's a bit much to be a huge hit. Top 20 I think.

it'll probably fall

by Sunday.

Made me try to like muse again

had mixed results...the lyrics arent that ambiguous...just repeating the same thing bellamys always drooling on about..."Its time to make things right, you and I must fight for our rights" etc.......

But has there been a more ridiculously over-the-top, over-egged and utterly insanely catchy pomp-rock single released this year, and one that’s certain to be a hit at that?

MCR?

hate muse

like ebola, this song is ok. But massively flat and overproduced like so much of their new stuff.

fin

I'm not so sure about this

Not a bad song on the whole, but for me it sounds like they really tried for a big epic closer to the album and it only partially hit the mark in my opinion. The first half of Black Holes... is about 1000 times better than the second half anyway.

if this is the end of muse taking themselves ultra-seriously

i might have to start buying their records

this song is fun. and so is the video, albeit in a lamer sort of way.

i was gonna wade in

by saying average average average, but then i read alcxxk's post. wtf?! it makes you realise how great the muse song is when you line up the black parade next to it.

i've nothing against emo, but that MCR single is the weakest, dullest, most unimaginative sound i've heard in years. it's amazing how gerard way talks about it in such ambitious terms when its sound is so underwhelming.

and then you hear knights of cydonia and you wish every song started out with muse's massive sound. i don't love it, but i do like it a lot and if you want grandeur then fu*k MCR because they simply cannot compete...

judging from all those interviews about jetpacks

and secret lizards plotting takeover, and the increasingly deranged nature of the music... i don't think Muse have ever taken themselves very seriously.

Muse

are wank. Simple as that.

go back

to your east 17 cd saddo

Fucking ace!!!!

I have to say this is one of mah fave muse songs ever on par with microcuts, stockholm syndrome and new born.

I swear to God you have not experienced this song until you have heard it live!!

IT IS GOD STRIKINGLY AMAZING!!!!!!

10/10 by far! : )

What an...

...Unforgivably atrocious abortion of a song...sounds like The Darkness reworking 'War Of The Worlds'. I can't help but think that all of Muse's supposed WACKYNESS is a cover up for the fact that they are three of the dullest human beings ever to walk the face of this planet and have absolutely nothing to say on ANYTHING that holds any kind of emotional resonance...i.e - Their songs are O.T.T 'bonkers' work-outs about absolutely NOTHING. Their sci-fi bullshit mystique is so transparant!

so because you don't like their music

they have to be horrible people?

they can't just make music you don't happen to like?

I'm sure...

...They are lovely people, what I am trying to say is that their music doesn't connect with me on a human level. All this talk of 'The end of the world' and 'Fighting to survive' has gone on for about three albums now...Their lyrics are consistently faux-criptic obsevations on some imaginary apocolapse. This frees them of the weight of writing about anything that might be a tad emotionally taxing, allowing the band to get on with the important business to riffing it all the way up to 11. God, I've made it sound much more exiting than it is in practice...

Terrible song

i don't get it with this overproduced shite......

me.

no.

like.

indeed

a quality song and im glad they had the balls to release a song thats a bit different and not entirely radio friendly

I heard the live version first

And I prefer it. The finished studio version doesn't get going till the massive riff at the end. But that more than makes up for it...

just heard it...

...Queen, or what?

Great stuff

Epic.
I still feel there's something missing though. A good chorus?

a good chorus?

ahem. bohemian rapsody. wheres the chorus? it wouldn't do for us all to like intelligent music

Best

One of the best songs ever

The Review Says it All...

... Except, in my book, it's a big, fat 10/10. Brilliantly ridiculous.
