The Horrors: Count In Fives

What is it about The Horrors that really gets your back up?

Is it the fact that they look like they've been dressed and made-up by Cruella DeVille's stylist? Maybe it's because their entire repertoire doesn't last as long as the intros to some Mogwai songs? Or is it that you knew all about the band before hearing a note of their music? I'll bet your real gripe though is the fact that they're out there, playing at being a real band, while you're sat at work twiddling your thumbs and making your boss another latte.

You see, if I was sixteen again, I'd be going nuts for something like this, particularly so in the current climate of market-orientated alternative music like The Kooks, The Feeling and Razorlight. For that reason alone, The Horrors are as important as anything else you care to mention at this moment in time: 'Count In Fives' is loud, fast, sharp and exciting, if not exactly new - you can find this sort of thing on any retrospective Pebbles or Nuggets compilation of the last 40 years - yet at the same time there's no one else out there making a similar racket, or indeed impact, in such a short space of time.

My real gripe though with this record - and The Horrors' output in general for that matter - is that it's a bit like taking that first sip of your sister's cranberry-flavoured VK Ice, or that first dab of low-base speed. The buzz lasts for about twelve hours, but when you wake up with your senses fully cleared you realise that you want something better, stronger and more substantial.

I was expecting a rant!

Good show, Dom!

Whilst waiting at the bank

today, I thumbed through a copy of the Daily Mail (eek!) where there was an article on this band. I've never heard a note but they immediately got my respect as they have done a cover of 'Jack the Ripper' by Screaming Lord Sutch as recorded by Joe Meek.

yeah

i agree totally, i saw them play they were entertaining at the time but forgettable and, as you put it, insubstantial

I'm not going nuts for this

Should I be feeling guilty?

i couldn't give a shit.

oh wait, i must give some sort of shit for posting this. but, i still feel the former.

My brother's band

played with them a while ago and he said the guitarist was really posh and polite. Maybe they should be called The Frightfuls.

kudos dom

my favorite reviewer. well stated and extremely objective.

Good work

Nice review.

no disrespect, but WHAT!?

The Horrors embody 'market orientated alternative music'! seriously.

and there is 'no one else out there making a similar racket'? this is retro styled GARAGE ROCK, there are thousands of bands making a similar racket!!!

in fact, the Jack the Ripper cover was done back in 2001 by the White Stripes! it's a cover of a cover for fuck sakes.

They are awesome....

The Horrors are different to whats around at the moment, its fact - by at the moment I mean Within the past 6 years, the naughties (for all the people who think that the past 40 years is now!?!?)

They are brilliant, their songs catchy and fast, went to see them in Norwich as part of the NME tour and they had by far the best set even though they started early and were only on for 20 minutes, it was brilliant way way way better that the fratellis

Im getting bored with the same old indie stuff coming out and this is a nice change, ordered the ep and sooo looking forward to their album due for release early next year...

Bollox !!!!

This lot a fucking dreadful !!

Ok, so this band makes you

a) steal your sister's drinks
b) do cheap speed

Sounds like a recommendation to me.

we released a single

three years ago by a band called the motherfuckers with a song called "i'm a fucker" which sounds pretty much like the horrors. ie 60s style garage punk. To say this band are original would be a load of toss. They're a lot of dumb fun tho. great review!

The Horrors

Are awful. End of debate.

The Horrors

work harder on their hair than on their music. This is irritating. 60's garage rock is what all music should sound like, but within said genre they are at best average, and actually, are probably pretty shit.
They're still probably better than anyone else who gets in the NME these days but it's hard to name bands that aren't.

it bothers me

that i honestly do like this band. ok, their image and the silly pseudonym thing is stupid but they have some quality choones!

shockhorror

I think this band are pretty funny. They have mental hair and clothes but at least theyr a bit different and crazy. Sheena Is A Parasite is a great song. I don't think they are especially musically talented but they are interesting.

ANYONE

WHO DARES TO SAY THAT THE HORRORS ARE SHIT!
I WILL CUT YOUR BOLLOCKS OFF AND FEED THEM TO YOU WITH A SPOON IN A CERAMIC BOWL!
OK?!
GOOD.
RIGHT.
OK.
GLAD WE GOT THAT STRAIGHT.

I DARE

hey sendmylove get your ceramic bowl off your stupid head because thats all you will use it for cutting your stupid ass horrors haircut.

they are SHIT they cant PLAY and unfortunatly they will probably go a long way.

OK?
GOOD
RIGHT
Ok
Glad we got it straight that the horrors are nothing but a two bit bunch of skinny shit bags who cant play to save their own life.

At least the sex pistols had something to offer but these dooshbags are only worthy of a heroin overdose.

GLAD WE GOT THAT STRAIGHT
