I hate defining a band’s sound – it’s not just rock ‘n’ indie now y’know; there are a million different sub-genres out there just to confuse the hell outta me. I’m going to make it my mission to find a nu-pop-quirk-core band. Grrrrrr.
So, to everyone who has dismissed Panic! At The Disco as emo, please read on (or alternatively, fuck off back to the Arctic Monkeys). P!ATD are NOT emo, despite all the signs that deceptively point to exactly that (the long song titles, they’re just bairns, and are as cute as hell). P!ATD defy genre stereotypes and are exactly what good, clean, fun pop music is all about.
‘I Write Sins Not Tragedies’ is one of the highlights from their debut album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. The plinky-plonky strings, the emphatic vocals (there’s no better lyric than “What a shame the poor grooms-bride is a whore!”), the driving guitars, the layers of drums, strings and piano rocketing into an absurdly catchy chorus, the careful intonation of the lyrics – piquing interest, showing passion, energy and soul – it’s all crammed in to showcase P!ATD’s amazing talent of writing a perfect pop song.
Call them what you like if you really have to pigeonhole them, but whatever you do just listen to Panic! At The Disco. If you’re not in awe of such a young band doing something innovative and exciting, then you’ve no imagination and deserve to listen to James Blunt until the day you die.
poor grammar
prevents me from giving this even half a chance...
"i write *about* sins; not tragedies" perhaps. Or maybe the poor deluded fools think they've created a new genre of theatre called 'Sin'. No, i think they're just inanely stumbling through what we might call "language" like a particularly clumsy bull at a crockery convention.
Oh hang on?! it sounds tortured and dramatic but is actually completely senseless... a Freudian Slip, perhaps?
its a quote...
from a Douglas Coupland novel....Shampoo Planet if i remember right. Although i dont think its a direct quote.
I finally heard
these on telly last friday. Im not going to pigeon hole them as emo, but I am going to pigeon hole them as fucking shite. Bad enough to be on Drive Thru. Oh right, Fueled By Ramen. Their neighbours and best buds.
LOL
HAHHAAHAHA, pigeon hole them as shite - Genius!!!!
Next time we have a band that splits opinion as much as Panic...
Can we have a better reviewer? Less clichés about 'showing passion, energy and soul', please? The 'But It's Better If You Do' one was fab
just because people dont agree with you
ms. reviewer, does not mean they alternatively like the Blunt.
narrow-minded much? yah.
.
life must be rubbish if you don't listen to bands who use poor grammar.
this song
is actually the worst thing on the radio at the moment.
yes its worse than america.
christ its even worst than the feelings recent effort.
no no no, thats just silly. both make me feel just as sick.
x
i think
it's the fact that they've gone for a grnadiose title that is meant to imply a certain erudition and a decent grasp of the language, only to cock it all up that makes this bit of bad grammar annoying.
If someone calls a song 'da yoof' i'm not going to find it irritating that the spelling is off, but if they call a song "a characteristically sharp and verbose riposte to those who doubted we're talents" it'll bug me.
Hold the mutha trucking phone a minute !!
There is no better Lyric than "What a shame the poor grooms-bride is a whore"????
Thats a bold statement to make.
No better lyric...
...in the rest of the song. Not EVER!
I knew opinion would be split on this single, but personally it's one my favourites! Horses for courses and all that eh?
Surely
it's "the poor groom's bride is a whore"? That makes more sense.
well yes,
but the lyric was quoted in context of the song. Like you've pointed out, they've got bad grammar!
as have i...
...in that comment. sorry!
umlaut-LOLZ
Ohhhh right. Sorry.
PHEW !!
You are right - they aren't emo.
They're just crap.
And I don't like Arctic Monkeys either.
Do I win something?
You win...
a James Blunt CD?
Hahaha! Joke! Sorry, it's Friday and I'm bored!
Grrrr
eat! choon from the poppy yanks emo, nemo, steamo, whatever it's as catchy as a cold and fills radio 1 for 3 minutes admittedly 100 times a day but rather that than beyonces new drivel
^
Can someone translate this for me please?
*Threatening Noise*
no way! it's a tune from the Americans-who-like-to-write-pop whether you want to call it emo or nemo or steamo like.. you know.. WHATEVER. it's as catchy as a cold and it might be horrendously overplayed but at least it's not Beyonce.
is what i THINK that means.
Nah
Its no fall out boy. Its a bit rubbish.
^^this
as bands with stupid long song titles go, fall out boy piss all over P!ATD
i hate this band
i really don't care what people say about "passion" and all that, they annoy me coz they're shit. and as for long song titles : "the difference between martyrdom and suicide is press coverage" dosn't make any sense and they should be taken out and shot for suggesting it. extreme maybe but then at least people would see that despite the press coverage they aren't martyrs
I really think
that if you're going to complain about such a particular aspect of a band, you should make sure you know what you're talking about first.
'The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is The Press Coverage' is a quote from a Chuck Palahniuk book, as are a great number of their lyrics/song titles, so if you have an issue with these phrases, then I think you should seriously consider taking it up with Mr. Palahniuk, rather than the people paying homage to someone who's ingenuity and creativity they admire. Hmm?
And I'm very sorry, you're obliged to have your own opinions, but 'they annoy me coz they're shit' is a reason in no one's book, as far as I'm concerned. If you're not willing to appreciate it for what it is, don't bother. Music is like art; it's not 'wrong' or 'right', or 'bad' or 'good', only the opinion of the person judging it.
So feel free to announce your hatred all over the internet, but I really think 'It's not my thing', or 'I don't like it' are much more accurate than 'coz it's shit', don't you?
And I agree, it was a weak review. But at least you can appreciate the reviewer's own enthusiasm for the band, and if she likes it, it's no one's place to tell her she's wrong.
And look, oh wow. My grammar was all correct.
Dear DiS,
If you would like your site to retain a shred of dignity, please never NEVER let Ms. Dupree "write" again.
This review is the literary equivalent of a pig retching into a bucket.
play nicely
I'm not a fan of P!ATD, nor do I agree with all sentiments expressed in the review. What I like even less is the reaction by the holier than thou indie fascists. If you don't agree with a review it doesn't necessary mean it is badly written.
I know yeah
"This site is going shit cuz it's got a good review of P!ATD."
Hmm, ok, yeah.
Dont you think...
there are more constructive ways to make criticism? I may or may not agree but I thought your comment was purile.
(Sorry for the poor grammar in the subject but firefox is denying me punctuation in some forms)
That
was to i_am_x by the way.
i fucking love this song
first few times i heard it i thought it was cheesey, pretentious and lame.
but now i fucking love it.
BUT i still think the "is a whore" lyric is probably the worst.
the "with a sense of POOOOOOOOISE and RATIONALITYYYYYYYYYYY" is the best lyric.
god theyre great.
Dear I_am_X
If everyone had the same opinion it'd be a very dull world, don't you think?!
bullshit
emo, schemo, its still shite whatever genre it is. i didnt like the review because its utterly wrong and hugely sycophantic. im sure the band would love to hear that they're 'good, clean, fun pop'
and that song title about suicide is fucking retarded
What,
even pop, rock, indie, RnB, rap, blues, jazz, syth, techno, house, electro, alternative, brit pop, dance, acoustic, country, punk, metal, trance and folk?
MUSIC is MUSIC. It's still MUSIC whatever genre it is.
And the title about suicide is a quote. Take your problem up with the author.
This review...
...isn't great, I'm afraid. Sorry. It's just that it comes across firstly as defensive, and clearly written by a fan of the band. Sure, all music reviewers are fans of particular bands/artists, and there's going to be an element of bias in any review - but reviews need to at least written in an impartial style to retain any credibility. Both Panic! At The Disco and Arctic Monkeys have their merits, and you need to accept that before put fingers to keyboard. Even James Blunt has... actually, no. He *is* shite.
This review isn't really worth anyone's time, simply because although you have attempted in part to disect the song and pick out its virtues, it's all futile when you attack those who don't like the band or pigeonhole them as 'emo' (whatever *that* is), and then go ahead and pigeonhole them as Arctic Monkeys fans. Anyway, think about it. Keep at it, but don't expect to win many plaudits from this site's readership, regardless of what you write, because the indie-snobbery is rife.
I believe that this is a fairly well-written, well-executed pop song. And for sure, their sound is quite interesting, and fairly unique, at least in the mainstream. It's over-produced, and they've been over-hyped and over-promoted for sure - and wasn't this released ages ago? Sounds like a cash-in to me. Meh.
Stating that this review is bad..
.. doesn't make a poster indier than thou. It makes him or her right.
In this case...
...I would agree. However, I was meaning was that it's simply that this reviewer's choice of review subject matter, i.e. not listening of choice for a large majority of this site's visitors, is going to line her up for abuse, no matter whether the review is good or not.
Wha
I believe contributers review the stuff they get sent from DIS, they do not just decide what they want to review, are you saying she should have lied about liking it? I don't personally like Panic! at the disco much but I don't feel the need to attack someone who does.
Gah
Sorry, I believe I've been misinterpreted. Instead of saying "no matter whether the review is good or not.", I should've said "no matter whether or not the review is well-written and well-reasoned." That's what I meant.
I should never comment on anything again. Not here, anyway.
"not listening of choice for a large majority of this site's visitors, is going to line her up for a
as with everything in life, the large majority can fuck off
overrated
panic! may be an achieving band in the musical industry but they arn't as cracked up as everyone makes them to be. sure they're music is amazing, but they've only just begun and they have a lot ahead of them before i consider them to be "piquing interest, showing passion, energy and soul". plus they arn't that good live.
i'm not in awe of them
do i really have to listen to Blunt? :(
if i had to have a choice between the two, i don't know what i'd do.
^^
Lawlz. <--- Me trying to use 'net slang and failing, I think.
This song is catchy, but so was "You're Beautiful," or whatever it was called. Both songs make me want to throw my car stereo into the nearest gulch.
