Theoretical Girl: Red Mist

Who is Theoretical Girl? Probably just some over-ambitious chemistry student to the uninitiated, but if this record is anything to go by, she's definitely worth raising the odd eyebrow and lughole to.

'Red Mist' isn't your average girl-sits-on-stool-with-guitar-and-whines-about-the-deep-south-of-America from the master bedroom of daddy's Knightsbridge penthouse. No way. Instead it's a sinister swathe that binds together a killer riff with the Girl's increasingly unmistakeable Siouxsie-meets-Julie Andrews tones that captivate and terrorise in equal measures.

B-side 'Dancehall Deceit' is even more beguiling, if only for the fact that it sounds remarkably like early '90s dance act The Shamen before they discovered E's were good and dropped tabs to Beefheart and Barrett. Quite where she gets her ideas from is anyone's guess, but let's hope this is the first of many to be let out of the bag.

Disturbing yet addictive.

Yep

Brilliant.

Seriously though

Does nobody else think Contrary Motion or Computer Dating are better songs?

Hahahhahahaha

Bet she hasn't heard that one before.

This actually sounds pretty interesting...

"girl-sits-on-stool-with-guitar-and-whines-about-the-deep-south-of-America from the master bedroom of daddy's Knightsbridge penthouse."

It's probably an in-joke that I don't get, but I'm picturing some bored ultra-rich teenage girl sitting there with Daddy's signed '59 Telecaster (through an original Fender Tweed) busting out a couple verses of Johnson's "Terraplane Blues." If someone did a 4-song EP like that, I think I'd buy a copy.

"ISN'T"

"ISN'T your average girl-sits-on-stool-with-guitar-and-whines-about-the-deep-south-of-America from the master bedroom of daddy's Knightsbridge penthouse."

Still seriously

Regardless of how awesome she might be, surely she can come up with a slightly more original name?

C-R-A-P

This is the worst kind of rubbish I have ever heard. I can't believe any of you people take it seriously. The 'production'(if you can call it it that) is dire: the resulting mix of dreadfully high-piched guitars and crummy beats make it sound like a home keyboard demo.

She simply cannot sing and the lyircs are the worst kind of posh girl piffle. She is probably desperate to dissasociate herself with Essex and been seen as a hip Londonite.

Pathetic.

You're so wrong Barthes.

I believe she recorded it on her 4-track at home and the result she got is pretty good bearing that in mind. It's lo-fi and crummy but endearing because of that very fact.

I love that she does everything on her own, even though she could have got a slicker reocrding done elsewhere, that shows passion for one's music does it not!

As for her voice, it's really good now. Listen to her acoustic songs if you don't believe me http://www.myspace.com/theoreticalgirlacoustic or listen to her newer songs http://www.myspace.com/iamtheoreticalgirl

Her production has got much better as her voice has.

And I happen to know that she's very proud to be from essex and hates london.

You should listen again.
Or just call her pathetic.
