It's hard not to hold some degree of admiration for The Maccabees.

Whether your boat gets floated by the street-urchin powerpop of early Weller or the sophisticated Wildean excesses of The Smiths, the Brighton quintet have more than their fair share of each in abundance. So from the outset, 'First Love' starts off like an express train of one-note reflexes and acerbic vocals, but as with all great pop songs, there comes a twist.

"Are you cool?" asks Orlando Weeks in a most inquisitive manner, before mischievously adding "Symmetri-cool, analyti-cool..." and so on until the song builds up into a minor explosion of heavyweight proportions.

While this may not have the immediacy of previous single 'Latchmere', it's a more-than-sufficient introduction, for the average daytime radio listener, to some of 2007's stars to certainly be.

  • The Maccabees 8 / 10

fantastic song.

the best indie band ive heard for quite a while, and theyre great live too! i hope the albums as good.

the previous single?

was precious time. which wasn't reviewed. )= great song too.

wasn't really a single

it was a promo-only digital live track with a limited 7" available only to fans.

this is a single.

y'dig?

hmmm

well, the cds i got from pure groove didn't say promo, nor does the cdr. nor is it live. are you sure about this?

does it matter?

theyre both great songs.

I've

not heard the song, but the review makes me think this is exactly like British Sea Power's "Lately", especially the second half bit.

"Do you like my neolithic rock?" etc.

never really liked

this band..but this track is OK.

great band, but this

is not their best song. Hopefully the good songs will all make the album...

They have the poshest names everrr

Orlando, Hugo, Felix, Rupert...

Not a bad song though.

haha

i think they sound like cat names!

my fave band at the mo though...well they have been for ages. Great live too.

I do like The Maccabees

And I do like this song. I missed them last night : (

The Maccabees are superb

Having been one of the highly tipped bands, the spotlight seems to have faded from The Maccabees a little.
They were one of the best bands at Reading Festival and recently played the Fez (to not as big a crowd as I expected) and were again playing beautifully crafted and clever pop.

To me they stand head and shoulders above bands like the Guilimots (sp?), Kooks, Fratellis etc etc.

This is a cracking single.

(By the way that Precious Time single was supposed to be a fan only release - call it Promo only if you like - but a few found their way into the odd shop or two. Released on CD and 7" - some were also signed by the band. Nice touch.)

and 'just like the rain'

is fucking excellent.

Love this song a lot

very very cool
