To this writer, The Cooper Temple Clause have always been synonymous with noisy, experimental indie-rock that makes the pulse quicken and the mind boggle - and that's exactly how I liked them. Mere seconds after popping new single 'Waiting Game' into my CD player, that description looks like it might need some revision.

I'm not somebody who expects (nor wants) bands to make the same album over and over again, and The Coopers have a tendency for slow build-ups, but my heart sank when I heard this through to its conclusion. No tension, no release, just FM-friendly heartbreak. What I wanted was catharsis via noise, what I got was tantamount to inoffensive coffee table fodder.

It pains me to say it, but this has more in common with the likes of Placebo or Suede than it does the sonic terrorism of old. Lucky for me, then, that this isn't an accurate reflection of the rest of the new record.

is this the one...

...that sounds dangerously like SNow Patrol? I fear it is...

yes yes it is..

trully shocking stuff

yeah i think so

i also thought it veered dangerously close to a bit whiny emo vocally too. where is Gautrey trademark raspy voice gone?

still, i'm holding out for the rest of the album to be a corker as their set at V Festival was fooking brilliant and lots of new material.

and...

i thought sanctuary had stopped releasing new material and were to concentrate purely on catalogue????

the video

is dire.

There was nothing wrong

with early Suede...

True

but not if you're in the mood for NOISE...

I had the exact same reaction.

And still do. What The Cooper Temple Clause exactly stand for can be debated, but it surely isn't aping Placebo. IMO they should push the boundaries of songwriting and this song is the exact opposite.

It's a grower, honest!

And it's hardly representative of the new album seeing as how every song sounds completely different to each other. Plus it's like the second worst song on Make This Your Own. Apart from one poor track and this the rest is absolute gold.

raspy voiced singer

I think its because its sung by Dan the guitarist rather than ben g.

These days

it really, really is. Suede's first 2 albums were good before Butler saw the joyless future ahead and jumped ship; and Placebo went on an exponential decline the moment their debut came out.

i'm afraid

the rest of the album is dire too!

The new album sounds like...

Mansun.

hey

nothing wrong with Mansun! i love them..
but should never be linked with tctc

hmm

ive heard the rest of the album and this is worst song on it. good review!

hmm

I think this is one of the better songs on it, to be honest. If the whole album sounded like this song I'd hate it, but as a one-off 'pop' song (like Blind Pilots off the last one) it's really good. Similarly, I'd have hated the album if it all sounded like Homo Sapiens. The album's fantastic due to there being so many different styles of song on it.

The 'trademark raspy Gautrey vocals' have gone to the other tracks on the album, cuz this one's sung by the guitarist...

ironically enough

personally, i think 'lets kill music' is the only decent thing they've ever done.

who needs enemies anyone for example was just painful.
x

nothing

ironic about that - but i changed what i was going to say, but forgot about the subject. nadgers.

Not a bad word about the band

This is a one off pop song and a bit poo, but the rest (All I See Is You....) is great.

this song

isn't really what i want from TCTC at all.
and i think this is a fair review.
i listened to the album properly for the first time today. not impressed.
a shame, cos kick up the fire was awesssssome.

but this song should still be all over radio 1 if there was any justice? it's VERY snow patrol.

So far

I do agree that this album is much more radio friendly than the previous two albums. But I still enjoy it.

I've got nothing

against Gillespie (I really like I'll Still Write) but he should not be singing half the songs on the new one.

Eh?

I meant Fisher. Who knows what I;m taling about anyway...

personally...

i thought the first album was ace, the last one dull and uninteresting. Dont think i'll be checking out this one at all

...

both the coopers previous efforts have been amazing, this song is not only rubbish but for me takes a tiny bit away from them. New record lable, photo shoots where the band have all been styled & comercial sounding singles sadly stinks of sell out to me.

Having spoken to kieran of said band

only a few months ago, I can indeed confirm that they haven't exactly sold out, but are going to be more famous and richer with a more commercial album.

You lot seem to forget that this is their job.

im a long time TCTC fan

... and i really like this song. Its the best of the new stuff that ive heard. Was nice live too. It's not quite Murder Song quality though, i suppose.

Remember remember...

This is a band who have lost an integral member in Didz and decided not to replace him.

You can't compare this album to the previous two as this is now a new band. This album is the start of a new journey as a 5 piece and is bound to have it's weaker moments as they have had to go back to the drawing board and experiment with the new situation. Each person is now taking it in turns on bass and this unfortunately means people like Tom don't have the freedom they used to to go mad on the synths etc.

The third album we were all expecting prob won't arrive for another album or two now due to this huge setback.

You've got to hand it to the lads though as they are staying true to themselves and even after the hardships of the last year there are still some moments on Make This Your Own that don't disappoint. I have every faith that sooner than you think they will be back to the old fiery manic noisesmiths that we expect them to be.

damn upsetting

i've almost never been so disappointed with a single, EVER.

boring, MOR, Placebo-y (not saying they're bad, but nothing like the coopers) and downright crap

absolutely NOTHING like the old stuff, and i'm gonna blame it all on Didz, the big fat splitter
