Christmas may have come early for anyone remotely interested in Roddy Woomble and his clan of associates. "Why?" I hear you ask. Simple: Idlewild have just recorded possibly their most exciting two minutes' worth of tape in half a decade or more.
While their Warnings/Promises album, for all its self-reflective intent and soothing initiative, and The Remote Part with its Roddy Goes Pop! approach, boasted several inspiring tunes of their own, not since the days of 'Roseability' or even 'When I Argue I See Shapes' has anyone felt the need to throw themselves around a room as much in elation as overwrought, pent-up, post-adolescent angst to an Idlewild record as much as this one.
The guitars are turned up to 12, the vocal sounds as vitriolic and dismissive as you're ever likely to hear, and it's all over in double-quick time. Cries of "More! More! More!" will resonate all across the land. If 'If It Takes You Home' is to herald a return to the more instinctive days of yore then it's an open-armed welcome from me, and him and her and so on.
So, without further ado, it pleases me to announce that the 'Wild are back. And by the sounds of it, they're wilder than ever.
Impressions from the scala
The vinyl's in the post, but from the gig last night this sounded like A Modern Way.. but with an American Idiot style riff, a bit worryingly generic. The other new songs sounded much more promising to me, on first hearing anyway.
sounds good to me
but i'll view everything with a degree of scepticism until the album arrives.
Anyone remember 'Victory at Sea'? It was a live song floating around on Napster between 100 BW and TRP. I wish they'd record that properly; it was so much better than anything on Remote Part. Brutal.
Victory At Sea
I'd forgotten about that song, got lost when my HD died a few years ago, got it off audiogalaxy (RIP!) a few years ago. Seem to remember it was pretty thrashy, like Whitewash, the much improved version of you dont have the heart.
Sounds great
really looking forward to hearing their new stuff now Roddy's exorcised his quiet side. has to be said tho, Warnings/Promises wasn't that bad at all, and TRP was excellent.
Welcome back the 'wild side tho
.
I was arguing only last night that Idlewild were a good band, but they had put out some shit. I hate to sound like a pleb but I 'really' do rate their earlier stuff (captain ep, hope, 100 etc) that said, I think that a modern way of letting go is a beast of a tune. Tiernan out.
seconded
and thirded.
Apparently...
Roddy's said that it's not representative of the new album, it's just an excuse to have fun live.
Pity he can't step back and say, "Well, if everyone likes this stuff, and we wanna play stuff like this live... maybe... maybe we should stop being boring MOR cunts."
I wonder what Bob is up to these days.
the new album
is alot more rockier, back to 100 broken windows era sound
as someone who has been into idlewild since they very very start i personally adore all their albums inc the last couple
but i went to see them in fat sams in dundee last week and their new tracks are sounding tasty especially one called "ghost in the arcade" or "ghost in the orchard".... sounds fine
ciao cs009d4735
bob has been
playin in the edinburgh band degrassi for a few years
almost since he left idlewild to be honest
Hmmm...
...I'm concerned.
'If It Takes You Home' and 'Ghost In The Arcade' sound pretty good but, all the other new songs sound a bit lame. When Roddy said 'oooh best put all my acoustic twiddling on a solo album and make the next Idlewild album loud' I kind of feared that that would mean a bunch of 'Modern Way Of Letting Go' clones.
A band getting older gracefully and losing the noise a little isn't half as annoying as a band trying to reclaim past glories and making a mess.
Again, these are concerns, I'll wait for the album, but I was far from over awed by anything new when I saw the show at The Plug last week.
meh, this is alright
but it just doesnt RAAAAR in the same way their old stuff did, it RAAARs in a controlled way like 'A Modern Way of Letting Go', and please.. Roddy, PLEASE, listen to this: stop your voice being like Morrissey's somehow, it breaks my heart :(
I like this
It certainly wouldn't sound out of place on The Remote Part, or possibly 100 Broken Windows.
It seems that Roddy's 'folk' album may have helped Idlewild.
Er
Am I the only person that liked the folk solo album?
I really enjoyed it. Doesn't mean I wish Idlewild would carry on cruising down the middle of the road mind.
I loved
his solo album. I listen to it all the time. I'd still prefer if Idlewild looked back to their 100 Broken Windows days for inspiration though.
this band is complety boring
and unoriginal. he sings like morrissey whenever i hear them its like rem. sad but true.
Grey_Panther
I quite liked what I heard of Roddy's solo album.
But Idlewild are better when they rock.
bland
.
This song is...
So ridiculously bland. How do they now manage to be so...dull?
MOR MOR MOR?
saw idlewild in circa 100 broken windows and they were incendiary. that's how i like to remember them.
tedious
if this is how they sound loud nowadays, they should probably just stay with the folk ballads. which i like most of, anyway
