I must admit, I’m a relative latecomer to Howling Bells. But judging by this single, it seems the wildly enthusiastic notices the Aussie expats have been garnering since the release of their eponymous debut album are absolutely bang on.
‘Low Happening’ is a brilliant advert for their unlikely yet hugely seductive blend of Mazzy Star-esque dreaminess and primal, down and dirty rock 'n' roll. It really shouldn’t work, but somehow it does and, frankly, it’s bloody brilliant.
The key to it all is Juanita Stein’s vocals, which straddle the two sets of influences exquisitely, her lilting coquettishness aiming fluttering eyelashes at the tribal drums and the expertly inventive guitars, as her rock sensibility brings the ethereality back down to earth.
‘Low Happening’ suggests Howling Bells to be light years ahead of their NME/MTV2 peers, and even more thrillingly it has the feel of a track which would work best in the context of the album it’s taken from. Whilst it does make for a strong single, it’s careful not to reveal too much of itself; besides, three minutes seems far too short a time in which to fully appreciate this band. I’m off to update my 'to buy' list.
One of those songs
Where'd i'd say no way the best on the album, but probably the best choice for a single.
Wasn't
this released ages ago?
Depends on What You Mean.
"Low Happening" was the band's debut single. This is a re-release. But I'm a little confused as to when this was released; I got it from Amazon.co.uk last week. 0_o .
Oh, Yeah, Also...
... Great song. But, like Sambop said, not the best on the album.
5th March
my promo says 5th March.
I Can't Remember Where...
... But I read 26th February. I think there may have been some confusion over the release date or something, 'cause I got this CD last Saturday from Amazon.co.uk. Weird... but unimportant, really. : P .
low happening...
was released last year on download only just as the band arrived here for the first time, but now repackaged in a lovely combination with vinyl and cd remixes of low happening by forward russia, the presets, sebastian, and little people, plus the great 4play feature on the band as an extra on the cd...which has a hilarious interview with the killers drummer talking about the bells in glorious fashion! it was officially released yesterday..
Great single from a great record
But you already knew that.
Low Happening..
is brilliant..i'm not sure they should've released it after Setting Sun, it's far better out of context of the album..
otherwise, ace band, ace song, ace album, lovely people!
saw them twice at the charlotte, once where the band practically outnumbered the audience, and the second time there were a few more (as i dragged them with me)
plus my boyfriend has the limited original gold 7" signed...yay!
