As I am sick of spam and sick of eejits, how about we have a board for newbies and they have to earn their spurs before they can start a thread?
i.e. they could reply to a thread and trusted users could then thumb them up as trusted users, then, like on ebay, they get the ability to do more.
what do you reckon? might it perpetuate the in-club nature of the boards? might it confuse people and stop them feeling part of the community? is it too much of a barrier? how many thumbs up would someone need to be "safe"? should we allow thumbing down? is there potential for gang mentality to sink in and a new form of cyber bullying to emerge if there's thumbing down?
this is by no means a definite idea but having just waste more time deleting spam, it seems about time for something to change

no way
YES!
It can be like Pop Idol. A board of DiS elders decide what newbies have eanred their stripes.
Fuck any talk of 'community' in the ear.
the newbie ghetto
is praps a bad idea.
but the inability to start new threads, only reply to old ones, may be good (especially to stop things coming up which have been discussed loads before)
NO
noes noes noes
Every new person should have the freedom to reply.
It leads the legit newbies to be able to "bed down" and get a bit of recognition when they post threads they want answering
JOHN
you've lost it.
If it bothers you that much then appoint new moderators?
They can do the tidying up that you can't be bothered with/don't have the time to do.
^ this
Just ask a couple of people to get rid of the spam. It's not rocket science.
I'm not sure but I think Warren's being sarcastic.
Kinda
It isn't a great idea, but trolls are properly annoying
That's why you have moderators
...
Did you read what sean actually said?
Clearly he doesn't think the current moderator system works well enough. This this thread.
I did read what he said
(twice actually as I've already discussed with him elsewhere) but we don't have moderators any more after Fishplums deleted them all.
Hmmm
Theo, who would you suggest sean give moderator powers to?
Me?
I have no opinions on that matter.
I'm just saying we didn't really have the spam problem when we had a bunch moderators. I don't believe we have a bunch or if we do, they don't sufficiently cover all hours of the site.
However, the issue with the old modertors system was they were themselves unmoderated, which appeared to irk people. Still, it's better than spam crap. Not that I've seen spam crap recently.
Admit it
You think I'd make a great moderator
I admit nothing.
Why do you think you'd be a great moderator?
I don't
Stop being so coy
I can think of someone who'd be PERFECT for this
Zapsta doesn't want to do it.
good, cause he'd be a rubbish mod
is it you?
^ winner
i only ever think about myself, DUH
How would a newbie
be defined? I haven't even managed a 1000 posts yet even though I started nearly 2 years ago.
That is for the elders to decide
I'm the oldest git
on here.
He supports Rs
so he's fine you nouevo riche cunt
Not at all
Don't let silly trolls marginalise new users so they have to seek "our approval" before giving them the "key to the promised land".
It creates an "in crowd" mentality.
Sorry to sound harsho, but that's how I feel and would be v v v sad if your idea took hold.
^This, completely
Hello_Dave!
I got some pegs belonging to you....
Blocking free trade of ideas can
only damage DiS's intellectual economy in the long run.
actually yes
^this
Thanks
Been reading right-wing economics.
Har.
IntellectuLOL economy
Seriously. Trolls are annoying, mostly unfunny and can be hurtful to some and a big pain in the bum for admins BUT they tend to just eff off naturally after a while, or if they are starved of replies.
what was that about Spurs?
I get the impression this would make it a bit of a closed shop. Maybe make the Social Board only admissable in this way, seeings as its hear where most of the nonsense is. I think. Or maybe I just miss it elsewhere.
Thumbs down
to this idea.
too much of a barrier
I think if this was the case it would be goodbye to user growth (which is probably good for DiS, right?). thumbs up and thumbs down would only serve to create cliqueyness and exclude people I think. Although maybe it would get Galacticboy to shut the fuck up.
Dunno how to stop the spam though, sorry!
Horrific idea.
What was the straw
that broke the camels back?
It would probably cause you more work
than just deleting the odd Nike spambot thread - there aren't THAT many people trolling the boards in the early hours these days are there?
It would probably also get you shitty publicity about being elitist, even if that wasn't your intention.
My suggestions:
- Have a 24-hour ‘cooling off’ period between account registering and allowing the first post.
- Have a 7-day ‘cooling off’ period between the first post and the ability to start threads.
I really don’t like the idea of the regulars ‘approving’ people. It sounds too cliquey, and would require them to spend a fair bit of their time on this Newbie board like marshalls or something.
this
seems like an irritating but sensible idea
Why irritating?
i mean
I get annoyed when i have to respond to a confirmation email to join a forum, let alone wait 24 hours before I can use it, but its an inconvenience that is justifiable, thats what i meant.
true
This would put genuine new users right off.
^ this sounds like a good plan
maybe
^
This, plus make a few more people admins and allow them to ban people temporarily. Like being in a sin-bin.
hmm
I don't like spam either, but identifying an eejit is a bit more subjective... it should really just be up to admin to set up some spam filters or whatnot.
I don't like this idea one bit
It's like being back at school and having to earn kudos before being in the 'cool gang'.
please can we have an "in" board for this type of fun
not because i really like the idea for the social, as i agree it would be WAY too exclusinve, but because it would be fun, something like the maccabees forum, but with the thumbs up thing
don't you have moderators
to delete spam and stuff like that?
I don't think you need to do anything else apart from kick your mods into shape.
I went on a board once where you couldn't start a thread without posting a few times first and it was just annoying. I just wanted to say hi and give everyone a mix in the mix section.
To get people to behave properly
you need to incentivise.
Less stick - More carrot.
Fascinating example.
In America, there was a recent epidemic of counter employees at Maccy-D's charging customers for meals, not ringing it up, and then pocketing the money.
All American Maccy D's now have a sign that says.
"If you don't get a receipt, your meal is free."
Hope this helps.

Nope this is a silly idea
Makes it less open to new users, this can only be a bad thing for the community.
Nah
The newbie board thing is a bad idea. I like the idea of rating posts though. As in +2 to -2, or thumbs up/thumbs down.
and gig tickets for the most thumbs up per month
Boomshanks.
horrible idea
This is a woeful idea.
I can understand how annoying spam is, but this is not the solution.
...
What about 1000 before you can start a thread.
If you want to start a thread before hand, you can only do so in the Announcements section.
jesus christ
this would be awful. 1000!? That is quite a lot of posts yo.
don't underestimate the fun
and release of bashing on the lamest jaggers,,,City Girls, Craine and others have provided us with maxilols aplenty y'knowz?
City Girls?
Link pls.
An unbelievably stupid idea
If the premise is to 'grow' the site then deeming people unworthy to join the self-appointed elite is going to be counter productive to say the least.
Yes
This is not Harrods.
yeah
we have to keep people like that coming.
Nah.
Just have to deal with it, I'm afraid.
I assume most people I see are annoying, but I'm not allowed to shoot them all dead until they prove to me they're actually alright. Not yet, anyway.
are you out of your mind?
this is a really ridiculous idea. just get some moderators. some impartial ones, preferably.
Did you know
that the Austrian courts are having real problems with the Frtizl case because they can't find a jury that isn't impartial?
Hang on
I've screwed that up
I like the idea
of Austria being awash with apathy towards Fritzl.
Did you see the Bill last night?
Nah
Did you?
Nah. It's not the same since Scott Maslen went to EastEnders.
maybe
but, what if a user changes their user name?
i only say this, cos well... i've changed mine.
I hate people who do that.
They should be punished.
Terrible idea
It'll just make this place more cliquey.
To stop the spam and the "hilarious" fake accounts all this place needs is a good few mods, either to have the power to approve or reject accounts of new members when they sign up, or to have the ability to delete threads and users.
Except the queen mother
That is the only funny fake account.
A Few Good Mods
in cinemas this autumn.
They were all that stood between DiS and spammy fake account anarchy.
I miss Don LeFontaine.
not don lefontaine
but funny. you prob seen it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXbFuNQwTbs
i don't see the problem
i dont see why there's any value in allowing people who've just signed up the ability to start threads.
we'd just have people starting
"oh i can finally post" threads.
yawn.
just get some people to 'keep an eye on things' or something
i dont see why there's any value in allowing people who've just signed up the ability to start threa
This is my country!
Go back to where you came from!
ETC.
just ban
logins from free e-mail accounts. football 365 operates that system and has no real spam.
plus it'd stop multiple accounts.
but the world and their dog
uses stuff like hotmail which is free and excelent. Who is going to pay for the use of an email adress its pointless.
I only have a free email account.
As long as you can swap it back to a free one after.
This is a good suggestion. Having a CAPTCHA on the sign-up is also good.
Keep the unemployed out!
no, that would be a pretty bad idea
how many people who use this site now have got an e-mail account that isn't free? i don't think it's that many
Everyone with a job.
Although of course we do get them for free... sort of.
do people use their work emails for DiS though
I mean you shouldn't really be on DiS at work anyway let alone using the email for social spammin.
Your arrogance is why people think this site
is turning to shit. This idea is simply an extension of that.
^^
meanwhile
instead of starting a new thread i thought i'd mention this in here: i just noticed that the pm inbox is slowly improving (on distest.com anyway). well done
improved how?
You get an emoticon of the person who sent you the message blowing a kiss.
Which will work exceptionally well for my rabid Mansun fans
If it's a nasty PM you get an emoticon of them parting their bum cheeks at you.
I do hope Sean is taking this on board
board! LOLZ
you'd like that, wouldn't you
What can I say, I like angry rings.
well the only thing that's happened so far
is you can browse through the pages more easily. they have numbers rather than just the 'next page' link or whatever. now if only they'd let you delete some pm's as well...!
It may be you can't delete them because there is only one copy.
So a note between you and Zapsta might only exist as one single note. If you delete it then it also disappears from Zapsta's inbox as you remove it from your outbox. And vice versa with stuff you've sent people.
do you have some kind of weird obsessive crush on zapsta?
also,
i should still be able to delete stuff from my own inbox, surely?
all the possible negatives of this idea
outwiegh the possible positives by FAR.
this is a bad idea. if you want a closed shop, which is what this will create, then just dont allow any new members at all, as of now.
Just get some more admins on board.
Sean's ego does not allow this as an option.
wasn't him who took them away though.
it wasn't me
this is correct. fishplums is my right hand man in this dept. but for instance this weekend he's at end of the road...
this is why you need someone with no life
HI!
Would this not require a bag full of admin?
terrible idea
absolutely terrible. And I thought DiS couldnt get any snobbier....
Simple but effective
no-one is allowed to start any more than one thread per board per day. Advantages:
-Reduces spam
-Doesn't discriminate against newbies
-people will think before starting a 'i'm annoyed at GS3 thread' or whatever
The threads will just turn into blogs
just think of zxcbnm
what would happen to him the next time he forgets his password? :(
could send a note to anyone online
through the account he can't sign in to?
Don't complicate things
...
I would also make _vikram and JDTs life a bit easier
:D (no offence guys)
* 'It' not 'I'
b*gger...why do i always balls up jokes
thats a retarded idea
and anyone who agrees with it is an idiot.
